Was recently drooling over Schrade's SCH503 series of lockback folders, except that the ginormous 3.5" blade length was a no-go. Out of curiosity, I sent an email to BTI Tools asking they had any plans to make a smaller version of the 503 with a blade length of approximately 2.5" to 3".

Their response? "We have no plans to introduce a smaller version of this but thank you for your suggestion" :(

I wonder if there is a reason for manufacturers to not release smaller versions of their knives?

Cost to tool up for the smaller (or larger) version, and a (perceived) limited demand for the smaller (or larger) version would be my guess as to the "why".

Considering how 2.5" - 3" is the magic number for the laws and LEOs in most countries all over the world (even in places without laws restricting blade length), you'd think that a smaller version is a guaranteed seller.

I think 3.5 is the ideal blade size, and would not buy anything less than 3 inches. So different strokes I guess. they just go with what sells the most i bet.
