I met a fellow who says he has a knife he found on a site of a WWII battle in the Marshall Islands. He says the tang says Buck 100. Is this historically correct, would there have been a Buck model 100 in 1944-1945?
Does anyone have a pic of a 100 they could post?
The knife is for sale for $100. Is that a good price if it is in reasonable condition?

Thanks,
Dale

If it is what you say it is I would think it is worth way more than $100.00. That said, I am not familiar with the Buck 100. Can you post a pic?

dale,
first one has to be carefull of conterfits and clames.
i personaly do not know how to ID sauch a year knife.
knives were made by buck and were stamped buck.
i do not know when the knives were first stamped with a number.
the one to realy ask is Joe who has a nice collection of pre incourpation knives. (he is off for the holladays so unless he checks this site at home you wont hear from him tell likely tues)
a few others have extensive pre 63 knives also but i dont know them.
i do know one but he dont do email much at all.
i have a number of images of early bucks that i have collected that date back to the 40's.
if you would send me a image of it i maby can match it to one.
IF this is real the price is not bad at all. If it is not then it is worth very little except as a example of a conterfit, and some collectors do have examples of conterfit knives in their collection...
i started to do so my self once but have not gotten that far in my main collection yet ..

Thanks guys for the answers.
I have not seen the knife yet. It is owned by an older gentleman who keeps it in his tackle box (he told me). He lived for 25-30 years in the Marshall Islands. He isn't a collector of knives, so far as I know. He seems like a trustworthy fellow who works in a local store to supplement his Social Security.

I have a few Bucks (what collector doesn't) but they are not my area of expertise. I have not seen a Buck 100 or for that matter any of the older bucks. The oldest one I have in my collection is a fixed blade I bought new in the 70s for a hunting knife, before I began collecting.

Hopefully, someone will come along who can post a picture so I will know what to look for.

Thanks again & have a great Thanksgiving.
Dale

OK,
I saw the knife today. I kind of felt sorry for the old fellow. The knife was obviously not a WWII vintage. I (not being an expert on Bucks) do not know when the 110 was first produced, but this was obviously a 110, as per the tang stamp. The stamp was: BUCK / (two dots) 110 (two dots).
I told him that I thought the 110 was first produced in the 1960s.

Does anyone know when they used that tang stamp?

Thanks for all your help. Sorry for the false alarm. I guess a guy has to follow the rumors a special knife............that is what knife nuts do. :D

Thanks again
Dale

...orvet...1974 to 1980 for the 2 dots...and I just realized you said 2 dots on either side of the 110. Those 4 dots would date it between 1981 and 1986...

Well, he didn't say he found it during the battles...just that it was at the site of battles...

Not worth much, IMHO...especially if it's been in a tackle box...

Maybe it's the "Army" one from that episode of "Lost" .
That's a bummer though when ya gotta correct someone that truly believes in the legend of whatever they got.
