Not an experienced Buck knife collector so posting this question after quite a bit of time search for date information. Needless to say learned a lot in this subforum so in advance thanks to all the Buck collectors and Employees for the great contributions of knowledge and history. Now that the brown nosing in out of the way...:D

Forgive any faux pas in the terminology I have been reading about this last hour or so.

Found a 102, right hand stamped, inverted three liner with four micarta spacers and an obvious rivet in the pommel. Two metal spacers on the guard and 1 in pommel.

I believe the spacers are micarta as they are not the brownish red when in bright light. If they were I ve read those would be bone spacers?

So based on all that (my head hurts now) I'm assuming its dating somewhere in the Group 1 1972-1973 range before buck flipped the tang stamp to how it shows currently?

Added: it came with a flap over sheath and single BUCK stamp on the snap.

Very good condition in my limited estimation. When I find my darn camera Ill take a picture and post it.

Ok how did I do?

Inverted right hand read tip down.

city, Welcome to the Buck Forum. Much to correct in your studies.
Start utilizing the search feature in this forum to obtain accurate information. The folks here are knowledgeable.
Your model 102 is from 1971 perhaps early 72 as Buck reversed the stamp in 1972. The spacers on your knife are maroon micarta. The earlier spacers are made from gasket material. Buck never used bone spacers on these models. The blade steel is 440C. DM

Concerning the spacer material, the material changed from fiber to micarta in 1969. David is correct that actual "bone" was never used. The confusion is the terminology used for the spacer material before the change to micarta. It was called "bone hard fiber", a descriptive term and not meaning what the material actually was. It was a type of gasket material common to the time.

A case where the wrong term was used and it stuck. Thus, creating confusion and necessitates reading more to find out what the material really was. DM

Mostly my belly and butt. :)

Took me a moment to catch on to that one Dave.... /R

Glad to see you still have your sense of humor. I don't think he saw this coming when he made up his name. DM

Just been a little busy the last several days.

Thanks for all the feedback! I seem to have the picture now on my knife find.

Yeah I gots me some fat on the back as well.:D. The screen name is a tribute to the book and movie of my hometown. Oh yeah I've gotten grief for it before. I'm good.:)

BTW DeSotoSky thanks for turning me onto those 50th anniversary bucks at the end of last year.

I've enjoyed your posts as well DM over the years.

Fatcity, congratulations. That's a great find.
The inverted 102 is still missing in my collection.
One day I'll find one.

Haebbie,

Thanks, it's a nice knife and given the excellent condition I found it in with what seems to be the correct period sheath as well I definitely count myself lucky.

Yeah I know still haven't posted pictures.

No need to get in any hurry. DM
