I recently traded for a buck 102 and i'm curious about it's age. it does not state 102 on the tang and the spacer material appears to be a red color. the sheath is the typical covered pouch type but it does not have the model number stamped on it. any help would be appreciated, thanks, ahgar

If it states a two line BUCK USA it was 1968+as they added USA .I believe in 1971 they added the model number, early buck knives with just BUCK can also be dated as to the "pin" in end of tang,or barrel nut at threaded at end.1961-68.

this knife is printed like this

BUCK
u.s.a.
the spacer material is red
and the pin in the pommel is clearly visible. thanks, ahgar

BUCK CHANGED THEIR STAMP FROM BUCK TO BUCK USA IN ABOUT 1967 AND IT REMAINED IN USE UNTIL ABOUT 1971.

okay so it's safe to say this knife was made before 1972, correct? thanks very much, ahgar

Safe to say before '72? You bet. The three line inverted stamping came in the fall of '72 and extremely early '73. To further split the hair, say circa '68 as the micarta spacers came along in '69 so to have the red hard bone gasket spacers....well '67 or '68 should be pretty darned close for your new old 102 ahgar!
