Anybody have any experiance with one of these. I am putting together a woods bumming kit. I carry a two bladed old timer for edc. Leatherman org. I need a semi cheap fixed blade that can be bought locally. Also does Home Depot or Lowes carry any decent camp axes? Thanks in advance. This is a great forum with good people and a ton of info.

For a decent fixed blade, there is no reason not to pick up a Mora. It will surely do all that you can reasonably expect from a fixed blade. I really like the 510 model. Delivery should be pretty quick from Ragnar at..

I agree that the Fiskars hatchet (which should be at Lowes) is an excellent bargain at ~$20. It's lightweight with a good edge/profile (compared to most others).

The addition of those two blades to your Old Timer should round out your edged tool needs very well. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a task you couldn't accomplish.

I have an estwing hatchet that has been a real workhorse I am pretty sure I saw one at Home Depot. I have always had good luck with bucks, although I haven't handled any of their new stuff. Chris

I don't know if you're aware of it or not, but some Bucks are made in China. If you go to the Buck forum, there is a thread or threads that discuss which are and which aren't and if you can't find it, there are tons of Buck fanatics who can answer your questions, including guys from Buck. Unless your goal was to use a knife exclusively for dressing game, I'd go with a Mora or some other non-hollow ground fixed blade, just in case I had a survival emergency and had to use the fixed blade for batoning wood or other non-slicing activities.

(I'm not advocating mis-using knives, I'd just like something sturdy enough for emergencies UNLESS I was confident I would only need the knife for dressing; i.e., on a managed hunt or something...)
