Hi Hawkeye5,

I have an old 103 in my hunting pack. The old 103 was given to me by my wife's Grandfather. It is a fine knife for skinning deer and also butchering. I wont go to deer camp without it.

Sharpened well, a 103 will skin JUST ONE entire elk before needing any retouching of the blade.
But in near darkness, two miles from the truck, light snow and 16 degrees that is a important thing to not have to do.

But if the Elk only loses 1* of body heat per hour (thanks, CSI!), shouldn't the residual heat keep you warm??? Just kind of snuggle up, feel around until you find the tarsal glands, pull your Buck sheath over your nose, and start skinning... and wait for dawn... :D

Jeff,
I don't have a 103 as yet, but use a couple of other Bucks that are semi close. A Vanguard in S30V Alaskan from Cabellas went through 4 doe this past season without needing sharpening.

But, I will add a 103 to the collection one of these days.

Oh,,,, the 470 Mentor is a similar blade kinda . Was what I used before the S30V Vanguard.

O.k. thats what I wanted to know.I can't aford to go elk hunting
dut I do deer hunt .The 103 sounds like it is what I want.I
like the looks and if it will work one a elk,one deer should not be a problem.
Thanks for you help guy's.

Is a 470 Mentor a buck knife?
jeff

I'm not packrat, though at times my office looks like I am.. but the short answer is YES - the 470 and its brother, the 475 are both Buck knives - fixed blade family.

Yes, but you'd have to crawl into the body cavity.

Methinks someone has watched too much Star Wars... :D

I know Pack Rat thought Star Wars, but the movie was actually a Western [James Stewart, maybe] and the villain had the hero trapped in a cave during a snowstorm...the villain was out in the open, shot a bear, and crawled inside him...the next morning, the hero decided he'd had enough, and came out to fight...but the villain had frozen to death in the bear... :(

I can remember 50 year old movies, but not what I had for dinner Monday... :grumpy:

Thanks for all the help.I like the look and feal of the 103 I
think better than the 470. The humer is good also.
Also how bo you know if a 103 was made in the 1960's?
and is the steal the same as a new one?

The Buck knives from the 1960s will be marked BUCK, BUCK dot, or BUCK / U.S.A. The steel was 440C.

I recommend you obtain the new Blade's Guide to Knives for more detailed explanations. Joe Houser and I updated all of the original Vern Taylor Buck sections plus we greatly expanded them. I think you will find this book helpful.

Jeff, I'm fairly certain that if the knife has Buck USA(two liner) that it was made in the sixties and would be 440C steel. Buck began putting the model number on around 1972 ie BUCK 103 USA. Maybe someone with more knowledge will be along and expand ours:). Preston

All I would have had to do was wait a few more minutes:D :D ...Larry's the one to listen to. Preston

If I'm not mistaken (I don't have my copy of Blade's guide with me) the number was added about 1969 for the fixed blades when they began offering the knives to Canada. If I'm wrong, I'm sure Larry or somoeone else will correct me.
