I don't usually frequent this part of the forums, but I figured I stop by, I received this knife as a gift today, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me about it. It says buck 105 on it, and the sheath also says 105. It's pretty neat, and looks unused, before I go off in the brush and use it does any one know much about this model?

And now I'll browse around this neck of the woods too!

It's called the "Pathfinder" and is still in production. Best I can tell from the pictures, yours dates as a group two and the blade steel would be 440C. See the data below.

"Group 2 1973-1980 Blade stamped BUCK, XXX, U.S.A. Stamp is right side up, read with the point up, as it is on today's knives. Guard has two micarta and two aluminum spacers. Pommel has two micarta spacers and one aluminum spacer. Holster style, or Flap over sheath still used and the knife originally came in a two piece yellow box but the switch to a one piece yellow box probably started around 1978."

That's a nice and handy knife Cap'n and a great gift to receive... quite different than the Beckers:)

Hello Captain Airyca, nice 105 you got gifted:thumbup:
It's your knife, and they were made to be used... I too recently acquired a 105 and my thoughts on mine are, this is my new woods knife. I think for camping/fishing it will be an excellent companion. Mine was gently used and cleaned up pretty well...and took a wicked sharp edge for me. That old Buck 440C is some of my favorite steel :)
Enjoy it!

Can't tell you about collectability.

I can tell you that, if you choose to use it, the 105 in 440C is an excellent general purpose sheath knife. Works well as a camp knife, works well as a hunting knife. I've used mine over the years and it's done well for me.

The 105 has always been my favourite Buck fixed blade and is still the standard for me as an all round bush knife. I like the full flap sheath as well.

That is a nice gift, Congrats!! My Dad carried a 105 with him to South America and back back in 1968. Mom has it now. I've used it a few times, It's a good knife. The 105 is on my To get list. :D
