Have a few questions...

What years were these offered?

Were all the black handles made of Micarta or were some made with Phenolic?

Stainless or Carbon steel?

Thanks!

Hi TAH,

the handles of the black handled 106 hatchets were made of phenolic with a hidden tang. Later they were made of micarta with scales. The steel was always stainless.

The earlier hatchet came together with a knife in the Woodsmen set 116 with no number. The material of the handle was Ebony. The steel has "high carbon content", what ever that means.

How does Joe always writes: Hope that helps.

Best,
Haebbie

Thanks Haebbie!

How rare are the ones with Phenolic handles? Seems like I mostly see Micarta handles on eBay.

It seems to be rare. I only saw the only one that lies on the cabinet in my living room, but not at eBay or anywhere else.

Here are a couple of Phenolic 106s. You might note the difference in the length. The Shorter one is a Buck* and the larger one is a BUCK USA both around 1967. Not perfect but then I have a few dents and scratches myself.

Enjoy,

Telechronos

The info exists, TAH, and I can give you a run-down when I am more sober ;) If I ever learn to operate that digital camera around here somewhere, I'll take a picture of the other dozen, besides the BUCK*, that made-up the line of 106s from '65 to '02 or thereabouts... if I sober that is. Robert brought up a good point in the fact that two phenolic lengths exist. The longer phenolic handle is the newer of the two. However, longer phenolic 106s were prone to cracking to a degree as were the phenolic 124s. Not common to them but certainly experienced by a few examples of each.
Thinking about conquering the 106s? Start looking NOW for the wrap-around micarta as they tend to be very scarce and grab the maroon scaled one while it is up on some such auction site at present under the listing of Buckcarta (hint, hint). There may be two listed right now but how good a detective are you??? Oh, and how deep is your wallet? Face it fellow BBFs. Ya' gotta be able to spend it without blinking an eye....

Thanks gd. Good information. So, what year did Buck discontinue the Phenolic and start using the Micarta?

As far as collecting, I am only interested in purchasing one hatchet to compliment my mid 70s Pathfinder. Obviously, the black Phenolic would be the closest match. Just wondering how hard it would be to find.

Hey TAH! 1969 was an interesting year for the 106 Hunter's axe. Five permutations were jammed into that year but we saw the phenolic production stop and the micarta (wrapped and then scaled) show up. A black, long phenoilc (3 and 3/8th inches) 106 would asthetically match, yes, but by the mid '70s the 106 was long since scaled with black micarta.... and those versions are not nearly so expensive but since we like what we like I wish you good fortunes on finding your phenolic hatchet!
Ain't this fun?

Dave

You, Sir, are welcome! Just do me this one favor, however. Don't cuss me when the BUCK FEVER really kicks in :) This is kinda like an encounter/support group for us Buck-addicted Brothers. We are all here to encourage one another!
