Recent addition. Sure wish it had the box. Appears to be micarta spacers. Has been sharpened, but did a great job. Sheath is in great condition. Spots are surface. Will probably send for spa treatment. Any significance to the inverted stamp? Birthdate?

(repost) If you are BCCI member, Joe Houser did a good review of the 106 in the March 04 Newsletter
Here is a brief summary, keep in mind that changes don't happen on January 1st so there are year overlaps.
Corrections welcomed.

1965 -1967 1-line phenolic handle, bone hard fiber spacers "HUNTERS AXE"
The earliest are chrome plated
1967 2-line (USA added)
1969 spacers change to micarta
Your axe falls here... 1970 +/-
1971 black micarta handle, earliest are rare full wrap around with hidden tang
1972 3-line (model number added)
about 1972-1973 some burgundy micarta was used
1983 handle changes to resin impregnated birch
1986 date codes begin
1993 last year in catalog..(for awhile)
1997-1998 reintroduced "CAMPERS AXE" 2" longer, birch handle
1999 black kydex handle, hang hole cutout
2000 black kydex handle, deer head cutout
2001 oak finish handle, deer head cutout (discontinued again until the Compadre version)

2-lines are generally considered consistent with an early 1972 or prior date. There are alot of changes going on with this model between 1969 and 1972 and with a low volume selling model such as the 106 and with midyear changes and new/old stock moving around the plant at the same time I expect we would see every combination/variation with no sharp delineation. /Roger

I'm having trouble finding my 2004 news letter. So,thanks.
I have a model 106, 2 line, full tang with black micarta slabs. So, I thought his was earlier and it is. But not by much. I would agree the burgundy micarta is 1973. Like the Empress Trio. DM
Edit, I found 2003 but not 2004 newsletters. Crumb.

I found my red birch 106. It has a 3 line stamp. A 1983 model. I noticed all of these have the same sheath. DM

Well, guys, I have three or four visible tang micarta 106. All have the upright two line stamp. Also the burgundy. In fact, I never saw a three line micarta 106. But that doesn’t mean anything.

Any insight on the inverted tang stamp? I had not seen it before.

Inverted stamps have been done since 1967. Perhaps sometime earlier. Then in early 1973 (group 2) the stamp now with model number was oriented upright. DM

Are you saying two line models could be stamped up or down as common practice? Not trying to be difficult, just trying to understand. The attached pictures is why I ask. Thanks for your feedback!

Per Larry Oden's book (Chapter 4 - 106 Hunter's Axe) the two line stamp started later in 1967 and they were both inverted and non-inverted with the inverted less prevalent. He also stated that it is possible to find a two line inverted with slab handles that came out in 1971.

Thanks to all! Got to get that book. My ignorance is showing. Larry

He^ is likely meaning slab micarta. Like Haebbie shows, both colors were used with a 2 line stamp. There was also green micarta used during this timeframe. June 2004 newsletter by Joe Houser. Also, the impregnated birch models with a 3 line stamp came out in 1981. I'll find mine and post a photo. DM
