For years, my Buck 112 has set the standard for what is a "good knife." I have been so pleased with the durability of the knife and it's ability to hold an edge. As a result I have purchased no other "quality" knives to which I might compare it.

I am being bitten by the knife-making virus and it is gaining control rather rapidly. I just got a batch of John Deere 5160 rod ends from Dan and am looking forward to working with these.

How will the edge holding and durability of a well-made 5160 knife stack up against the Buck 110/112?

While Buck makes a great knife.....there is a lot of potential for improvement by switching to a different steel. Chances are you'll have trouble duplicating or improving the edge geometry and all that stuff that makes the 112 cut so well on your first knife. Buck really squeezes all they can out of the steel they use.
5160 has the potential to hold an edge longer and be much more durable than the steels buck uses/has used in the 110/112. So if you get things figured out a little bit and work it right you should be pleasantly surprised at the results :)
