Buck 110 (50th Anniversity) Hard to Unlock to Close

Just received a Buck 110 (50th Anniversary) knife from eBay which seems to be new out of the box as advertised. Very sharp. Opens and locks great. Strong blade snap in. Zero play, side to side, or up and down. In fact the lock in is so strong it's a major struggle freeing/unlocking the blade to close the knife. First two closes were difficult. When I finally got a third close, I opened it partially and put some oil in the blade pivot/lock area. Working better now still hard to "unlock" the blade. I'll continue to oil and work the blade back and forth.

But is this problem unusual for this knife? Will it eventually work out? Trying to decide whether I should return the knife or not. Any advice appreciated. Thank you

It think what your doing is perfect. It will more than likely work itself into a set and you will be happy.

I've had good luck flushing a tight lockback under hot water, opening and closing until it frees up. Polishing residue may be stuck between the lock bar and the liners causing friction.

Flushed the lockback with hot water. Not much better. Then added a couple of drops of oil. Not much better. Repeated that process 3 times. Not much better. Starting to think the problem is mechanical.

I have recently sent back a knife for exactly the same problem. Mine was so tight that it wouldn't close all the way and the tip stuck up sometimes waiting for me to grab and cut myself. I tried everything except spreading the inside with a large screwdriver. Sent it back and returned with a perfect walk and talk. If you think there is a problem send it back with a form off the Buck website for returns stating that closing takes very hard pressure on the release and it should be taken care of. I had a very old knife that would not snap open or snap shut and sent that back and now it snaps very lightly open and closed. GOOD LUCK OldMarineVet!!

Thank you, Michael. Your problem sounds worse than mine. I just need to get the open blade past the lock. Then it closes fine. It's actually getting much better today. I flushed it more with hot water as suggested above. But then sprayed some Break Free CLP instead of the oil thinking that could "break free" any debris I can't see. Your good experiences with Buck support is encouraging. If the closing doesn't continue to improve, I'll send it to Buck instead of returning it to the eBay guy. I really like the knife and it's a 2014 50 year anniversary version. So I've decided it's a "keeper." I'll either loosen it myself or send it to Buck. It's now MY KNIFE.

Thanks for everybody's help here.

You are correct when you said I have experiences with Buck warranty. I have actually stopped purchasing Buck knives because the last four I had to send in for repair on brand new knives. I also use powdered graphite that you use to spray in locks to get them to work freely. One had dents on the brass bolsters another they left the end of the laminate applied to the knife and it looked like a scratch going perpendicular to the grain. I got a 30% off coupon for that because they said it should never have left the plant like that. and little things like a white handle G-10 knife so dirty from grinding dust, I cleaned myself. Which I should not have had to do. SEMPER FI, OldMarineVet

No need for my new Buck 110 (50th Anniversary) knife to be seen by Buck. It's unlocking very well now. Excellent knife. Thanks

That's very good to hear, things Buck uses polishes or grinding dust can get into places that need to be oiled or flushed or just worked in or out to get everything working and it is an amazing difference when it is all clean and free. Mine I sat thru a whole basketball game opening and closing putting it under hot water with Dove soap but nothing would free it so that one went back to Buck and came back and I was amazed at how well it worked when it was right.

I just used a Waterpik set on high on my new 110. It created a water disaster in my bathroom, but I highly doubt there is any debris left in that knife. Then I used canned air to blow the water out. I'm going to run it dry without oil for a while to break it in.
