Hi Guys,

The Buck Custom Shop offers the 110 with a black oxide coated blade.
Has anybody made expieriences with these blades? How durable ist the coating?

Many thanks for your answers.

Best,
Haebbie

I don't have any 110's with the oxide blade, but my nighthawk and quickfire have it. It definately smooths with use, but I havent chipped any or scratched it deep yet.
I'll try to remember to get you some pics IF I ever get home in daylight again LOL

Thank you, that will be fine, postfallsidaho, at least in the next summertime!?!?

Best,
Haebbie

But is there no one else who uses a black oxidized 420HC blade?

Black oxide, black paint, Teflon, and Parkerized (phosphate) coatings are all relatively soft. Even gun bluing, an Iron Nitrate compound is not noted for its wear resistance. Try to obtain blades with coatings of TiN, ZrN, TDLC, TiAlN, and BN. These materials are as hard as ceramics and will give excellent wear and corrosion resistance. They can also be used to sharpen other knives when used as finishing steels.

Haebbie, this is a Buck 178, adrenalin titanium liner knife w/ ATS-34 blade. It was used hard in my edc rotation, and spent a few months lost in my work truck. The black oxide coating has held up nicely.

Thanks, guys, for the Information, and Scott, for the nice pictures.
I'll think one more time to recommend the black oxyde coating for a custom knife.

Scott, may I show your photos in a German knife forum?

Best,
Haebbie

I didn't forget about you Haebbie! ;) I am off today, and its kinda nice out LOL

Here you go, hope these are adequate. The nighthawk has cut anything and everything. I got it from "Goose" years ago, and have used it since. The Quickfire was my EDC and hard user (for a pocketknife) it was affordable and worked! Now its my sons to use. You can see fine scratches and wear, but the coating is intact yet.

Thanks for all those great photos, guys. I have been wondering about that black oxide for years, but have been hesitant to order a Custom with it. Not anymore though.

Thanks a lot for the informations. Now I know what to do.
Have a nice Weekend.

Best,
Haebbie
