Hey guys,

I just bought my seccond Buck 110 from Walmart. And the side to side blade play on this one is bad. The tolerances between the blade and bolsters is much sloppier than the first one I bought. Is there anyway I can decrease the blade play?

thanks

The blade play is easily gotten rid of. Knock it with a hammer, or put it in a vice to squeeze the bolsters together. Go a little at a time. You can go too far and tighten the blade too much. Then it requires loosening.

The problem is this damages the bolsters with dings and exposes the pin that joins the bolsters and acts as the blade pivot.

Getting the bolsters back to factory look requires some technique - peening and sanding and polishing. It is the "art" part of the fix.

Why not just take it back to Wally and have them give you a tight one???

This is not your problem.......it's between Wally and Buck.

Unless you just have too much time on your hands and need more projects to keep you busy.

If that's the case......hammer away!!

:D:D:D

I would just return it and have them give you a new one like suggested. Its disapointing to hear a new buck with that much play.

Put it between the pages of a paperback book to protect the brass finish. Tap the book with a hammer. If not tight enough repeat the process. If too tight work the blade sideways with your hands. Usually this will work and will not mar the finish.

alrighty thanks im gonna try the phone book method

Hit it with a phone book??? Rip the phone book in half??? Look up Buck's phone number???

Phone book method??? I tell ya, I leave for 5 minutes to order a pizza, and I miss everything... :grumpy:

Pick up phone book.

Put hammer back in tool box.

Place knife in your pocket.

Look up phone number for Wal-Mart.

Call and tell them you're bringing their damn knife back.

:D

Oh, *paperback* book...OK! I got it now! A nice thin paperback, not the Manhattan telephone directory... :D

...And DarrylS's hammer... :cool::thumbup:

Yeah, I could see 334dave doing something like that... :D

I vote for the phone book method...find the WM store and return it for a new one. Or, look up our address and return it to us for a new one. There should not be subsrtantial side to side play in a new 110. In case you can't look up our address in the phone book and/or don't already have it (not likely) I will provide it at the end of the post. you can send it into our warranty dept or directly to me; I would like to see it actually. Either way we will get you a new one and take care of you.

If you send it to me, just put attn: Bill Keys on the address label. If you sent it to waranty, put it to their attn.

I have an older one that loosed up after a while, because of how I open 110's one handed. (A lot of thumb pressure on one side of the blade.)

I have a vice with leather rubber-cemented to the jaws; any cushioning material will work. Gently squeeze the pivot bolster only a little bit and it will tighten up. If it gets too tight, you can use the spine of the other 110's blade as a wedge between the bolsters, gently move it side to side and it will loosen up a little.

I would send it to Bill (Keys) though; it may be a QC issue that needs to be addressed.

thx -cpr

This may be considered "off-topic" in response to the OP, but let me tell you that I'm impressed by the response of Bill Keys! Too many companies now days know how to talk the talk of the customer being #1, but darn few walk the walk.

Thank you Bill, and Buck Knives, for this great example of truly superior customer service.
