My original plan was to get a Buck 110 Alaskan Guide folder at Cabela's, then run by Wal*Mart to maybe get a standard 110. But after receiving the Alaskan, I'm thinking, why bother? It's really a gorgeous knife and I've even decided to let the logo stay.

To those of you who have used both the standard and the Alaskan, can you give me a rundown on how one stacks up to the other in actual day-to-day use? I know the promo lit says the Alaskan (with the S30V black blade) will show about a 45 percent performance increase. Is this an accurate statement?

I also noticed that the model with the stag grips goes for $87 more than the standard Alaskan Guide version. Cabela's prices are:

Standard Buck 110 (420HC), $35
Alaskan Guide 110 (S30V), $68
Alaskan Guide 110 w/Stag Grips (S30V), $155

As nice as stag is, does it really justify the extra $$$?

The stag is nice if you want it. But is it worth the extra $87? No. The Alaskan Guide 110 is nice as well, but is it worth $40 more than a wally world 110? Again no.

Personally, if I were you, you have just puchased a knife that will last decades, if not longer. Keep it oiled and be somewhat careful and it will last. I'd probably use it, and not buy the cheaper standard version.

I've never used the S30V in a Buck, but that steel is Paul Bos' favorite, so that says a bunch. That said, if you like sharpening knives, there's nothing wrong with the standard steel.

Congrats on your new knife.

We'd love to see some pictures

You mean no as in your oponion, to a lot of people, S30V is definately worth the extra money.
