Buck 110 galling?

Hello Everyone,

I have recently began my collection of folding knives, and inevitably this meant acquiring a BUCK 110. My choice: the 5160 steel blade edition with oak scales (with hidden lockbar pin; some had this feature and some didnt). The knife looks and feels perfect and I will post pictures soon. One thing I noticed worth mentioning/asking though, the lockbar seems to really drag across the blade tang with considerable resistance when opening (more of a ``rubbing" then a ``sliding"). It seems almost like galling , which dark streaks along the blade tang seem to confirm, though I cant be sure. Again, I will post pictures once I am able, but in the meantime can anyone else confirm if this is anyways normal for this knife? On my other lockbacks I dont see or feel anything like this.

Just put a dab of lithium automotive grease on the blade tang. That should clear it up.

If it is new there may still be some polishing compound from the factory in it. I would give the joint a good cleaning and then lube.

Thanks for the tips guys. I had already cleaned then lubed generously with 3 in 1 a few times. So Im sure its clean. Action would smoothen a bit, but soon enough the rubbing feeling would return. I will give the lithium grease a try when get access to some. Hopefully it provides longer lasting effects.

A 110 should be smooth with no lubricant needed. If you haven't cleaned out polishing compound before, it's wax-based and therefore requires a solvent to be dissolved. My favorite way of cleaning it out of a blade joint is to use a fine oil like WD-40 and soak the knife in it, especially the pivot. Work the action a few times then clean the whole knife off by rinsing with very hot water and then washing with Dawn dish soap and hot water. Dry throughly and then relubricate the pivot with a thin oil and a grease if necessary.

3-in-1 oil has a bad reputation.

Thanks for all the suggestions. On closer inspection, and after looking at another buck 110, it looks like the back of the blade tang surface is uneven and that this is creating the non-smooth action when opening (at least I believe so). I have decided to send it into BUCK. I will update on what they find/do.

[/IMG]Update: Around the time of my last post, I sent my knife to the Buck warranty department for the problem described above. My knife arrived back on my doorstep yesterday. I couldn't wait to open the box to see the knife and the repairs they had done. Instead, I could hardly believe what I found. They sent me a brand new, beautifully finished replacement knife (shown above)!! It opens much smoother than my old one too (in the end, I think the problem was not galling but just a very high spot on the back of the tang). The scales are also more of a reddish brown which I prefer. I love the new knife!!

I should mention that Buck sent the knife back to my home in Canada free of charge, and they also threw in a 30% discount coupon with my knife. I've read so many times about their legendary warranty service and customer support, and I can tell you first hand, it's all true! THANKS BUCK!!!!
