I thought 425M was between 440C and 420HC in terms of edge retention.

Loren,It is.Don't let one bad apple...
Its close to AUS8 or 6 in ingerdients.I've had real good performance out of mine.If I don't want to use my Bucks w/ 440C because I'm holding them for collecting.Then I don't hesitate to use a early year date knife w/ 425M steel.They're a tad more to sharpen but cut well.When I go afield w/ it I'm confident on what it can do.
Your 4 dot frame is also beefy.A good model.DM

I think it is 425 modified as well.My all time favorite Buck steel would be damascus,next is44,0c bg-42,then s 30v then 420 hc.I really love the edge i get out of the damascus.

.. i did not say it was a bad steel ....
jest not my fav on the typ production steels buck uses
for hunting and skinning most would like the 425m better..
i have used 110's constantly ever since 1967 in hard construction
not hunting or office or rescue work or leo
the edges on two dots are thicker and better for hard construction use
of course most folks can not sharpen the thicker edge correctly
so they would like the 425m better..
i did notice the change in the blades on the 4 dots but did not know why..
the blades/tips would break/chip more often then the 2 dots ..
did not notice they were harder or easer to sharpen ..
every one has fav's for diffrent uses..
my most fav is Damascus for looks
then s30v for all around using
then the old 440c for hard use..
have not used bg42 or 154
later

Dave,No body's coming at you.You said the blade rusted I believed you.One that rusts I thought was a bad apple.Your experiences differ from mine.We mostly just express our experiences here.Glad we can do that.This forum is much more mannerly that some of the others.I'll keep trying to conduct myself accordingly and otherwise was not my intent.I like your steel choices.DM
