Hey guys. I have a custom 110 I just got, but own two others. I'm curious if the knife is supposed to have a little bit of play closed if you grab it with your fingers and move it, but much less in open if you really try? My other two seem to be similar, but slightly tighter (they're production 110's). Thanks!

If it’s secure when open it won’t make any difference. If it really bugs you. Send it back with a letter addressing your concerns. Buck has always had great customer service afaik..

I was more so curious if it's the norm. I don't want to bother them with my little obsessions, but if it's supposed to be different than described I'd send it in.

I’d say give it some break in time or maybe a cleaning at the back spring area. I have a 501 that was a bit loose in the closed position but after cleaning, oil and some cycles opening and closing it settled in nice and no play. I think in the finishing process some polish compound and or grinding residue gets in the moving parts to foul them some. Usually some use will work it out but if it annoys you then a careful cleaning and oil will help. Then if it persists to be a problem send it in and Buck warranty will get it fixed.

I have a few 110's that have play closed, but not open. Since it's only when closed, I don't worry about it.

I got it tightened down to where I want. Smoothed out the pivot. Polished out smooth and out looks OK, but how do I get the mirror finish? I used dremel red compound on a buffing wheel & then Noxon metal polish. It's reflective but not mirror.

Yeah nickel will get dull and scratchy looking just handling it. It’s about as soft and scratchy as brass. But a little flitz and microfiber cloth it can be shined up fairly easy save for deep scratches or dings.

I won't go too crazy trying to get a mirror polish then... If it's dropped is it brass underneath (as in plated) or would it be fine?

No it’s solid nickel silver, no plating. Nickel silver, sometimes called German silver and brass are very similar in their alloys. I believe nickel silver has more zinc and of course nickel otherwise both have a good amount of copper. Both are softer metal than say 420 stainless but not as soft as aluminum.

NS contains nickel and brass does not. Both have copper and zinc. NS is slightly harder and slicker which is why the old rod makers used it over brass on rod ferrules.
