I recently got it in the mail and it seemed like there was sand or something in it. It felt really rough opening and closing it. So I got some q-tips and a tiny screwdriver and cleaned it out and some black chunks came out. I oiled it up and it's not rough anymore, but when it's closed there is a lot of blade play, and it's annoying. Is this common?

Closed yes, the blade play is common. It's NOT supposed to have play open though, but as I've found, many new produced 110's are not how they used to be. 4 I bought in a row were all returned due to blade play...

There's no blade play while open, so it should be fine. I wasn't sure if I had got a lemon or not. I'm not surprised that they're not as good as they used to be. Nowadays they have so many different knives that they're making that they probably had to cut back on somethings.

The blade play isn't normal, the black stuff kinda is. It's let over buffing compound I suspect, I open/close new 110's under a running faucet to flush it out then dry them off and oil.
