I am gonna buy a Buck 110 in the next few days, I think I am just gonna get a standard 110 with the 420HC steel. I held a friends Cabelas 110 with the S30V and after inspecting the brown leather sheath it came with I saw something I didnt really like. On the inside there is a little velcro circle glued over the button to keep from scratching the knife. This seemed really cheap and not sturdy enough to last a year let alone a decade.

Does the regular 420HC 110 with the black leather sheath have this velcro circle too? Is this thing a problem staying attached and protecting the knife from scratches? How have your black leather sheaths stood up?

I have an old brown sheath I have used for 8 years or so and the piece glued in place has never moved. That sheath has been around the block, too. I don't think you have anything to worry about; they wouldn't do it if it wasn't tested, tried, and true. BBJ

If you're going after the base 110 then check out the one at Walmart. It is $26.99 at my local store. It has a nylon sheath that you might like better. That said I think the leather from Buck is top notch and will last you for years. But if you prefer a non-leather sheath, those are great too.

On my Alpha, I took the rosewood off and put on rubber grips and swapped the leather for nylon (thought the leather was to nice to scratch up). The nylon sheath has a horizontal carry feature I discovered I really like.

So for me either way, Buck sheath's are top notch.

I also have several old 110 w/black and brown leather sheaths some did not come with any thing over the snap and have used them allot with no scratching to the knife.

My 1st 500 didnt have anything over that button and It started to leave a
circle-I actually had a piece of vecro that I put over it to stop it-wasnt glued though and when it would fall off it was all sticky-I guess Buck stole my idea and improved it:p

Savage,Buck has been glueing a piece of felt on the back of the snap for like 20yrs. and it does protect the knife. This is certainly a minor take on the knife.I would not make up my mind on a bird dog's ability if he had one yellow spot and I perfered him to have a red.
Don't hender yourself w/the leather sheath.Just get the nylon.DM

i have to concur with my esteemed like named friend
for real useing get the nylon!
leave the leather for dress up carry..
i have had only one velcro dot come off and i think it was my falt..

I just checked out three different style Buck nylon sheaths and they all have the back of the metal snap exposed inside the sheath. I do have one (a real cheapy) that closes with velcro but it's for a 112 and I don't know if they made them for a 110 or not.

You might want to check the web or Ebay for one of the custom made open top ones. They don't have any snaps to worry about.

If you compare the older 110 sheaths with the ones that come with the knife these days, the quality has gone down over the years. I typically order new 110's with the nylon sheath and then use an after market sheath for carry. I use the nylon sheath for storage of the knife since the leather ones have a tendency to stain the brass. This is just my solution to several problems.

I have noticed the staining my self I store mine in a plastic container and not in a sheath, the staining will actually pit the brass.

My wife was sticking those felt pads in my sheaths a long time ago. Same ones she uses on bottoms of things she sits on furniture. and the ones on the inside covering the back of the snap are felt and not velcro.

If you have trouble with the felt dot, you might try a strip of felt going from the bottom inside of the kinfe pocket to the top lip of the pocket. This provides more glue area and doesn't allow the knife to get hung up on the dot on the way out or the way in. Further, there are Buck sheaths out there with a plastic cap on the rivet with no felt dot. The plastic does not harm the knife. FYI.

Thanks Richard, I've seen those plastic coated snaps as well.I have that type on my 110 AG and it seems to work and it came w/ a darn nice sheath.DM
