I am not posting this thread to bash Buck but I feel it is important for buyers to be aware of.

Last Saturday I picked up a Buck Slim Select 110 at a knife store while on a road trip. On the way home I came to the conclusion that I really liked it and ordered on of the Slim Pro 110s with micarta handles and S30V.

At home I measured the blade length as this was my very first Buck knife. Buck lists the 110's on their website as having 3 3/4" blades but the one I had definitely wasn't.

The Pro arrived yesterday and holding them side by side I expected to see the Pro blade significantly longer but it wasn't so I measured it. I do have to say I really like the Pro a LOT more than I expected even compared to the Select. Had this been my first knife purchase I could see myself being a one knife guy, it's that good.

So a word of advice to buyers of Buck Slims would be to measure that blade before purchase if possible.

I have reached out to Buck but I understand they are busy and probably short handed and am patiently awaiting a reply.

Just wanted others to be aware.

I'm not sure a 1/8"-3/16" difference would really make much difference. But if the missing fraction bothers you, send it back to Buck. They have fantastic customer service and will make it right for you.

I've seen blade length variation with lots of production knives, FWIW. There is something approaching 1/4" difference between my shortest and longest ZT 0452 series knife, for example. Don't think this is just a Buck thing.

Mine are around 3.5 inches (slim and standard 110). My 78 110 is a full 3. 75 and my custom is close. My Benchmade crooked rivers and minis are all slightly different. Even primary grinds can be varied. It's the nature of the beast with anything that is made by human hands. As long as it's not a 3 inch blade I wouldn't worry about it. Or send it back to buck and they'll fix it.

The slims are great knives. I want to grab a 110 pro in G10 but have just been lazy. The frn version is pretty awesome, and my 112 pro is an amazing little knife! Buck does good work.

I've never seen blade variations in length before. That should be a big no no, for legal reasons.

I'm shocked a company like ZT could do that too.

I am not sure I understand what you are saying.
Those are 2 different models.
They have completely different blades, as do the other 110's.
Is it just that Bucks's advertising states it is a 3 3/4 inch blade and its not?

I’ve see this before with all brands. I think it is the length before finishing. It is frustrating.

I always thought of it like lumber. Once it’s finished it’s a little smaller. A 2x4 doesn’t measure 2”x4”.

Or like hamburger. A quarter pound patty is the weight before it’s cooked. Not on the bun.

Moderators please lock this thread. I received a reply from Buck, will not buying their products again. Believe it or not it saddens me.

Here is the email. I find it hard to believe that pre-punched to size blade blanks are allowed to ground up to 1/4" off the blades length during sharpening which in my book is defective workmanship.

Probably the most irritating thing is that the employee didn't even sign the email. I'm out of this thread.

Hello Tracy,

All of our knives are hand sharpened and can vary some in overall length when it’s a finished product.

Thank You,

Isn't that almost years of sharpening life removed? I mean assuming the blanks were the same size, someone had to really go to town on the grinder with that. Maybe keep those for a factory seconds sale...

Buck turns out a very high quality product at reasonable prices. But they are cranked out at an extremely fast pace. Fit and finish is extremely good for a production knife.

They are sharpened on a belt, they tend to have recurves and sometimes are a little short. I wish you could buy them unsharpened.

Still they are a quality knife, for a good price so I’ll keep buying them.

I’ve seen that done with lumber. Cut it off three times and it was still to short. The kid asked the shop instructor for a board stretcher. Lol .

My 110 slim pro was a tad over 3.5 not quite 3 9/16ths. I kinda think it should be closer to the advertised length but I know that production is fast and feverish. I’ve watched a video of them sharpening knives. With that said I also learned in a production line that using a guide or a mark can help with consistency and still be just as quick and maybe even quicker with more accuracy. But for a using knife I’m not gonna fuss about 1/16 to 1/8 at the most in length. I’d fuss more about the blade depth from edge to spine.

Are you upset that one is 1/8” over spec or the one that is 1/8” under?

As an aside, I don’t think I’ve ever actually measured the blade length, to that precision, on any pocket knife I’ve owned.

What difference does it make when using the knife?
