Hey gents, I'm looking for a folder similar to a Buck 110. 3"-4" blade, clip point, lockback, and preferably brass and bone :)
Any suggestions besides a Buck 110 or 112? I really like some of the Schrades, but I want something new or like new that is of quality, and ~$40. Maybe more if i can be patient enough and save my money for once.

Look at the queen mountain man. No brass sadly but beautiful amber bone. And for 60 ish its not a bad price. And if you want a really good one save even more for a GEC lockback. It is new, and you cant find them for under $100...atleast I think you can.

How come you don't want a Buck 110 ?

It's probably better than anything else you'll find for the money.

There is nothing wrong with those knives mentioned.

But,someone would eventually point out that Buck has a Custom Shop that lets to pick and choose SOME variations. Also there are aftermarket guys that would put on a good piece of jigged bone on a 110 body you could pick up for under $35. If you shop around for the knife and craftsman you really might could come up with a 'Custom' knife for $ 60 to 100. Just thought I would say in case it wasn't known....300Bucks

There used to be some more variety in that type of knife.

Camillus, for instance, made some really nice knives that were very similar to the 110.

Today, in your price range, there's the standard 110.
(Its variants, such as the Buck Custom Shoppe 110's, are more expensive.)

Case still manufactures the Mako, which is very much like the 110.

Moving away from that style, there's the Queen Mountain Man mentioned above.
It's available in Amber Carved Stag Bone, Birdseye Maple, and the new Curly Zebrawood.
(The Zebrawood is a knockout IMO - really gorgeous.)
If you look around you can find them in the $60.00 range or thereabouts.

It's a very solidly made knife with a 3-3/4" blade of D2 tool steel which is probably even "better" than the 110's 420HC in many respects.

Also, Great Eastern Cutlery and its sister brands Northfield and Tidioute are producing some excellent (but not inexpensive) traditional lockback knives.
Most have blades of 1095 carbon steel; others use 440C.

They go for about $60s.00 or so to well over $100.00, and offer a huge selection of handle scales in bone, horn, wood, and synthetics.

If you're trying to keep it under 40 bucks, the Kissing Crane stag lockback might be your ticket. It looks just like any other 110 clone. The blade is just under 3 inches and mine locks up solid with no wiggle. I have found the quality to be excellent on the Cranes, given their price. I got it for 28 bucks from AG Russell. It's hard to argue with a stag lockback for under 30 dollars!

I got a German made Böker lockback in carbon for under 40USD.

It might appeal to you but it's not as sturdy(thus heavy) as a Buck. About 4.25" shut with beautiful Washboard Bone handles, very nicely made handsome knife. Other bone types available. GEC also do liner locks in case you are willing to consider them? Same as their slipjoint patterns 23 (monster) and the smaller 73 but with an effective liner lock.

Hope this helps.

I dunno. Like the Tahoe/suburban/denali a Buck 110 is one heck of a hunk of metal for it's price (and I found one at wally world for 10 bucks a couple years ago). I thought they were the shiz when I was a kid and acquired a number of similar knves but never a 110. If it's what you've got your eye on there really may not be a substitite.

Most of the knives mentioned in this thread as alternatives are smaller, if not in length in width and heft than even the 112. For example one of the similar knives I have is a Camillus BSA locker that is a match for the 110 bladewise but doesn't have the same stoutness and heft as the 110.

I have a Case Mako, and it is a nice, smaller lockback. It's fairly thin and feels good in my hand. It's not a cheaper alternative though.

If weight is an issue, try a 110 EcoLite.

Don't forget the Buck 55 if you want something for the pocket. I agree with the110 being the most bang for the Buck.:D

Since the 110 is your standard, go with that. You could probably find 2 for 40. Great knife, it was my first "big knife."

Yah I guess I'll have to break down and just get myself a 110. Where should I look for customized 110s? I just don't like the wood grain scales is alls.

But I also really dig some of those Case's, and I do only own one Case...

crunky,

Buck 110 are accepted by most to be one of if not the best large folding knife for the $$.
If you look you can often find them in megamart stores on close-out at or below there cost. Some have reported buying 5 or 6 at a time at under $20 each. BUT, if you don't like wood scales you will have to find a special edition or have someone put a scale on for you. Let me suggest you first go either a knife shop that would stock special editions or view the major email auction site and search Buck 110s. You can see what comes up over a few days and get an idea of price and materials. The Buck factory custom shop does good work but your choices are on there list. And it is not long.
Check out the knives mentioned above and what I have said and enjoy picking....you won't have me for competition....
