I just found a couple of old Buck 110's that I got years ago from my dad and grandpa and I was wondering if anyone could try to tell me how old they are.

Here's a link to a picture of them: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1...?key=OWhmM2tDUkwzaDlsaEtkaHhDSWZwMUF6dTUyTTln

The top one is stamped Buck 110 USA with no other markings and the bottom one is stamped Buck 110 USA with one dot on either side of the 110. Both appear to have stainless steel rocker rivets. I think the leather holster is original to the top one but I couldn't be 100 percent on that.

Eli, welcome. Your top 110 was mfg. from 1972-73. Your bottom knife was mfg. from 1974-80 with some discussion among collectors.
The sheath is from 1993-97, Buck 3 times on the stamp started in 93. DM

They look due for a blade replacement. They seem to have been used a lot and sharpened much. Buck will give you a new blade for something like 10 bucks (no pun intended).

If you replace the blade, it's not Granpa's knife anymore or a 1970s knife. It's a Frankenknife. I think Buck will just clean it and sharpen it for free.

Sorry for the long absence. Thanks for the info guys. The older one definitely needs a blade replacement. Much as I'd like to keep it original, the blade is more beat to hell than the pictures show. I think at one point, my dad used it to pry something and bent the tip. As for the 74-80, I might just have them adjust and sharpen it.

I did some other looking around, and I think I saw that only version 5 had the stainless steel rocker rivet. So they'd both be version 5 right? So then they'd both be from 1972-1974? And then since the one has dots on either side, then It would have to be from 1974 right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Reading thru the dating of a 110 can get confusing. But they are dated using several items. The stamp, the pins holding the handles, the pins in the rear bolster, the wood, ect.. Your 2 dot is firmly considered to have been mfg. from 1974- 80. Your other knife earlier. DM

You don't have to have Buck polish out the brass and wood if you want to keep the same look. Just have a new blade put in the one that needs it and have the other sharpened.

The wood and brass still have wear and patina from your dad and grandfathers use / hands, so I don't think new blades would change the face that they belonged to them.

If Buck would send you the old blades back you could put them with pictures of your father and grandfather.

As far as you know, is there any chance that the sheath is older than that but the snap was just replaced in that period? I ask because I've not seen too many sheaths like it, and the ones I did find had different snaps.

That sounds like it'd be a good idea for somebody, but honestly, the knives aren't really sentimental to me. I mean my Dad and grandpa are both still around. And I'm only 23 so unless some kind of accident happens, they'll still be around for a long time!

Ah I see.
my dad is still around as well, but my grandfather died when I was 8.
I would love to own a quality knife that belonged to my dad, but he traded His Buck 505 to a buddy for a Farrah fawcett nude while he was in the army, and has no clue where his 110 went. The only other good knives he had were those from his childhood that his oldest thief of a disowned brother swiped while he was off in the army ,because of that he only had cheap flea market knives around to give me.
I received my grandfathers Victorinox classic which was worn out, but luckily I was also given a pink one he bought my grandmother. she just wasn't a knife person and never used it so she gave it to me and I went ahead and swapped out the scales, Now I've got a Vic classic he bought that's got scales worn by his hands and pocket. He didn't use the knife itself but he held it's handle scales everyday.

You may not want to save the blades for any sort of sentimental reasons, but you can have 2 newly bladed Buck 110's for the price of 1 brand new one at Walmart.
7$ and change for the flat rate box to ship it to them, 10$ each for the blades, then return shipping and any possible service charges should put you under 40$ and normal Walmart pricing for the 110 is 38$
That's one helluva deal for 2 buck 110's with handle/ frames that aren't too shiny to want to use.
I know I was obsessed with keeping this childhood grail knife of mine nice and shiny.
Whether you have any sentimental attachments to this knife or just want 2 good knives for a great steal I think you should get these rebladed by the fine folks at buck who love keeping their wonderful products in service for multiple generations.

I doubt it. I have that sheath and it came on a 1993 fg 110. A up grade sheath. Not offered much. It ( the sheath) was offered with Buck's
damascus blade 110 a few years earlier, 1987 or so. Which likely had Buck one time on the snap. Good luck, DM

.
Currently just under $28 for a Walmart 110-at least in IA(I think $27.96). They dropped the price when they went to the nylon sheath. I'd still prefer to fix an old one than buy a new one though. I have several new ones and buy another every couple years if I find a clearance deal, but only have one old, square edge handle like that. Sent it to Buck for repair, they fixed the lock, resharpened and polished the handle. Still have the old blade with its signs of years of use. I love that knife.
