Your guess is spot on. The grooves were cut by someone and not factory!

The grooves look like they were cut for lashing the handle to a pole.... improvised spear/lance.
 
sea, Where are you getting those mutilated Buck knives? A 110 and 120. You could send the 110 to Leroy at Triple R knives and he could restore it to original condition and bring back its value. Those scales are solid macassar ebony and sought after these days. DM

Thanks for the advice I will contact Leroy. I usual don't hunt specifically for the knives as I am mainly a user and not a collector per say although this forum could sway me. Anyways I just picked this up in a junk sale. A lot of five knives this 110 and a 309 and a first production Western plus 2 others for 20$ couldn't go wrong!!!!


p.s. the 119 went to the spa last week
