Picked this up at a garage sale. Does anyone know the history on this one?

Hogtied, I can't believe you bought that at a garage sale...I don't remember the guys name but the bass I believe was caught from Lake Fork near Quitman, TX in 1987. For it was in all the papers the following week. I think he either donated the fish toward breeding purposes or released it back into the lake. But I remember upon reading it I could'nt believe it. Even Bass Pro Shops had one on display once. Not sure if it was the same one. DM

Bass Pro shop had Big Bertha on display in Springfield, but I don't think she was the same fish as the one on that knife. I think she (Big Betha) was from Texas also.

I think the lake Fork record is 18-18. I think that the record 22-4
was caught in Georgia.but am not sure.

World Record - 22 pounds, 4 ounces, caught in Montgomery Lake, Georgia in 1932.

Yep, indeed it was. I remember reading the story about this in one of the outdoor mags (e.g., Sports Afield, Outdoor Life, etc) a number of years ago. As I recall, the bass in question was caught by a boy, obviously during the Great Depression (1932), and his greatest concern was that this fish was going to break his line and he would lose his only lure so that he wouldn't be able to help put food on the family's table. And yes, it was eaten!!

I subscribed to Field & Stream for years, though the 80's, and they did a story on it also. If I recall correctly, there is a black & white photo of the boy holding the fish up????

That's most likely the same story I am remembering as well; however, as I recall, the photo was of a young man and a bass caught either in Florida or California (can't remember which) that weighed in at 21 lbs and some odd ounces that was then the number two record fish and that was the basis for the story of the world record. Being addicted to bass fishing as I was at the time, I carried that photo around in my wallet for many years until it just fell apart.

Yep. I believe your right. Florida comes to mind, and I remember that folks freaked out when they heard they ate it.
