Buck 110

I have had a bunch of inquiries on this topic and have not been able to determine an answer yet. I know that Cabela's is offering the 110 with an S30V blade coated with Titanium Aluminum Nitride in their catalogue but I have not been able to find out if it is something we might offer in our custom shop. Still trying to hound up an answer on this one.
420HC is cheap and Buck is going to stick with it? Hmmm, Joe, try to control yourself and be nice...

Well, I bought a 110 in 420HC a couple of months ago for a 'loaner' but I've had a hard time letting it out of my hands. and it's held up great, in the kitchen, around the shop, and in camp. One of these days I might send it back for a BG42 transplant...
But you know, 420HC ain't bad in the real world... it cuts just fine :D

I'd be willing to bet that a large majority of knife buyers who are not knife nuts won't notice or care if the 110 is S30V. The 420HC knives I have from Buck sharpen up very well and hold an edge better then any other comparable quality knives I have. The general public is not likely to understand a price increase for what they all ready considered to be a top quality knife.
I was at my local knife store the other day and watched a guy pass on the Alpha Hunter in ATS 34 for the regular one in 420HC because he preferred the rubber handle model. It was obvious that he didn't understand or care about the difference in steels. For most people the Buck name means quality and thats good enough.
I wonder what the sales difference is now in models Buck offers in both 420HC and ATS34. I'd bet the 420HC knives are outselling the ATS ones by a wide margin.
I own a couple ATS34 Buck knives as well and love them, and have a couple 110's in BG-42 on order from the custom shop for me and my brother for Christmas so I appreciate Bucks offerings in harder steels, but fail to see why they would make an across the board change unless it improved quality without effecting cost.

A little story to back up what Sean W said...

I have a buddy that's always commenting about my knives, but unwilling to spend the money to get something higher end.

When I found out about the Cabela's 110 I ordered one immediately because I felt they were a steal at $60.

I shot him an e-mail with a link to Cabela's telling him it was a steal and that he should order one. I figured even he could see the value.

WRONG, I get an e-mail back saying it was too much money.

So the moral is, I think Buck should stick with their bread and butter and continue to offer limited editions, special editions etc for those of us who appreciate the higher end steels.

Now Joe, we need to talk about an S30V version of the 4" skinner with Green Linen handle material :D

.

I have not heard that we were going to S30V on all 110's but i can promise that that is not going to happen. If it aint broke, don't fix it right? The Classic 110 serves so many people just how it is.
We will be making more knives with that steel on a limited edition basis. Plus, we do keep putting standard knives in the line with the choice of an upgraded steel and our 420HC.
I think it is great because just a few years ago we were pondering the wisdom on messing around with BG-42, and ATS-34. It was quite a debate around here, would enough people care enough to pay the premium that often comes with those steels? Now, there are several knives in the line and every year more are brought to the drawing board. Now I have to get me one with S30V to see what all the fuss it about. :)

Get one that has a Paul Bos temper, use it and you will see what the fuss is about. Nuff said.
