I found one of these today, early 80's model, few scratches on the handles (nothing major). Blade appears to have never been sharpened, bit of play in it when open though.

Biggest "issue" is that it was engraved on one side with a guy's name (not mine:D ). Anyway, is there a good way to remove the name? Can Buck do that and address the blade play? Or, should I leave it be and enjoy it as is?

Also, what is a ballpark price on one like this? I see mint in the box ones on Ebay but this one is not in that league.

I like the knife and might just leave it be and carry it. Light and thin enough.

Hi Ohen...
I have three of the 111 Urban Cowboys (as I call them).
Two with shiney scrolls and one with a matte finish.
IIRC I paid between 45 and 100...the higher one coming in flawless condition (except for the wear expected after a quarter century of handling aluminum) with sheath.
None of the three have been engraved or sharpened...so I can't help with the engraving. I guess it depends on how deep the engraving is...I would leave it as it as when you polish something out, you are effectively wearing away metal to get to the lower level of the engraving.

BTW, I think the matte finish on the scroll is the rarer of the types...which did you get?

The scroll on mine is matte and the blade is a mirror finish.

I was considering trying to buff out the name since it is a matte finish and would be easier to make look close to normal. However, I think I'll leave it be. Maybe get my name engraved on the other side if I do decide to carry it much.

For $20 it's a nice piece so I'm happy.

I like the Urban Cowboy name, very fitting!

Thanks for the info.

Great score Ohen!
I will have to check my matte and see if it has a mirror blade. Gotta find it first. Need to set up a better method of organizing or displaying my herd.

OK. Do you have a pic of the 111 with the unwanted name inscription? That's only aluminum...if it's not too deep, it should buff out...you'd want to use a dremel-like tool with a tiny buffing wheel, so as not to accidentally buff out the fleur-de-lis...or put a chip through your fingertip...

Trax,
I could take pics but since I've given up my gold status I don't think I can post now.

Appreciate the help. I'm still pondering what I should do with it. Hate to make something worse

Thanks!

Read post 6 from Trax regarding pics...
Please post a pic.
Curious.

If it's the cheap jewelry store "engraving" (done with a woman's vibrator) it should sand down and buff out easily...if it's a gunsmith's engraving (done with a mallet and chisel) then I'd say you're SOL... :(

That does look like factory engraving... :(

Would probably leave a noticeable groove if ground/sanded off... :(

You could change your name... ;)

Trax,
That's it! Spend thousands to change my name and alienate everyone I know:D

Sage wisdom, I'll brief the wife on that plan in the morning!

Or maybe I should just buy a mint one without a name on it.

Decisions, decisions.....
