I just received this in the mail. I found it on a well known traditional online dealer in his "bargain bin" for $20 plus shipping. It seemed like a good deal as I could tell it was an older 112 with a 2 line inverted stamp. The single picture was not great, and not being real familiar with 112's I thought it had wood handles like my other older Buck 110's. The handles turned out to be a dark linen micarta. After a bit of internet sleuthing, I believe this is a 1st version, 1st variation. It's clean & in very good condition with some beautiful rainbow patina, no pitting, 1 small scratch on the blade, some minor fine scratches in the bolsters. Vertical lock is solid, with a tiny bit of side play. Edge has had some light use, but appears unsharpened. Am I wrong on the identification? I'm really happy with the deal, feeling a bit guilty, since if I am correct I would think these are hard to find in this condition.

Sherman01, All I can say is WOW! That was a super deal and that is a great knife find.

mqqn, I cannot tell what variation yours is. I would need a photo of the butt end to identify it for you. It's very rare to find them in that shape. DM

Thanks David -

It is a first variation - brass spring holder - I also have a second variation, it has the steel spring holder, although it does not have the box and is a little more worn.

Second variation -

I also have a Shedua version -

In the Buck 112 models they are called Category then there are Versions within the Category. Different from the 110s that are called Version, then Variation. Your knife does have a brass spacer spring holder, with black Micarta scales which makes this knife a Category 1, Version 1 made during 2 weeks in May of 1972. Category 1, Version 2 had a stainless steel spacer spring holder with black micarta. You don't often run across these but they are out there. Yours is not in very good condition but it was a great price for the knife. Nice buy for you.

Sherman01, Nice score that is a fantastic 112 and a steal at the price you got it for!

As for the rest....

Call them what you like, catagory or version, variation or versions....LOL. Just know there are more than one list and they are different, the current BF linked 112 date code is listed as sawgrass points out. So for the newer Buck nuts it maybe easier to use the newer list so folks don't get confused, you now the old Potato-vs-pototo thing.

Anyway, here are the three Micarta handled 112 in one photo. these are all used and the "Catagory I, version II has been fully radiused and not as issued from the factory. The second photo has a whole bunch of the 112's laid out as issued and some extras tossed in for fun.
