I have a chance to get a NIB 50th Anniversary Buck 112 Ranger at good price. The question is, this knife does not have a handle Medallion/Shield. It has the correct markings on the Tang - No 112, Anvil with a 50 in it. So the question is, why no medallion. I think a read somewhere that some variations didn't have a medallion, so what gives?

Welcome to the Buck Forum.
Sorry, I don't have a definitive answer but I know that several editions in past years(100 Year Anniversary and the 110 50th). had some with the medallion and some without. I would say you have to decide what is important to you.

Wasn't the 50 year stamp on the blade tang used all throughout 2022? I sent a 1990 112 in for a blade replacement and the new blade had the 50 year stamp. I assumed it's because that is the blades they were using in 2022.

In other words, if you bought a standard 112 in 2022, it should have had the 50th tang stamp. The ones with the medallion were commemorative models.

As I understand it, the 50 inside the anvil was simply the date code for 112's made in 2022.

Yes, that's exactly what Buck's "How Old is My Knife" page says:

*2002

The anvil was used instead of model numbers (on all knives) this year only.

Customs still use the anvil mark.

There are various versions of the 50th anniversary 112. Some have a medallion. Others only have the anvil stamp (done throughout 2022). Some of the stamps have "50" in the anvil stamp.
