I bought these two 112's/nickel silver bolsters off ebay with the date stamp
to be from 1987 and upon closer look these two blades appear to have originally been a 4 dot blade. Here is a photo

Wow, cool but odd!

Either 4 dots that were restamped, or 1987 that's had dots added for some reason???

I love "weird" stuff like that!

Nice! Could be a date code for "2087" but wait then they have not been made yet!!!
Looks like the blades are even different in some ways. Like the nail nicks and grind.

never noticed that, but you are right the blades are different upon closer inspection and the nail nicks are different, the smaller nail nick is placed lower
on the blade and the dots are struck deeper.

on the blade with the bigger nail nick the date code and dots are struck lighter.

two interesting 112's

Buck found some old blades and worked them into the production of the day?

Or does it have something to do with those Nickel bolsters?

Or does some guy have a dot-stamper and uses it to create more interest in his offerings on the Bay?

I think they are old blades worked into production.
The seller i got them from is in post fall Id. , she either works at buck or
went to a sale. The sticker on the box has the bottom half torn off, but
the top half reads 112BRSSP1

Yes I beleive Buck had some N/S 112"s at the sale how ever I did not pick any up. Looks like I should have. Could they have 440C or would 3 dot be 425M? I would have to "assume " the 3 dot is the date the blade was made and 1987 was stamped later. I do not think it is hardness tests punches as the dots should not be lined up where the date code would be.

After looking they could be 4 dot and the arrow is placed over the fourth dot.

Those are cool Tom. I agree Long, the arrow is covering. Interesting that they are FG N/S with an overstamped blade- I guess they were really committed to starting the date stamp program and had a few 4 dot blades to build out. They gotta be listed as odd and collectible:thumbup:

I agree with Scott. First I will stick my foot in my mouth and say they are 'employee' sale knives and as such are restruck blades assembled in 87 bodies. As Scott states there has been something written recently concerning dots and odd dots...

Scott, Thanks thats it ! I remembered this topic has come up before and they could be a restamp of a 4 dot or 3 dot . Just not sure if theres a dot under the > . Thanks Tom for the photos . A great unique find . DM

BG, Yes ! Thats the other one I was thinking on . Darn, I'm glad you guys are around .
Tom, this should help you . Hang on to it as we still don't know why Buck stamped them as such . DM

To follow up on this: I found the article Joe H. wrote and Larry O. contributed, Blade Stampings, in the Dec. 2005 issue . It has most all the stamping we discussed here and many more we've not seen . DM
