Buck 112 - lack of availability

I have to admit, I've never handled a Buck 112. I'd like to handle before purchasing. You would think this knife would be a staple in sporting good stores, and a shoe in at Cabela's, but no luck.

If a Buck rep is listening, push hard for the Buck 112 at Cabela's. The 112 would sell great to the cliental at Cabela's and my save the next guy like me who wants to give Buck his money, but would like to see if it fits his hand first.

Who am i kidding, I'll pony up the $40 and probably love it, but that custom shop 112 sure is pretty. ;)

The 112 has never been available like a 110. I had one knife store in 200 miles that stocked them. Now that business is gone. I've not found them at Cabela's or the box stores.

I have never seen one in the wild. It's a shame too as it seems like it would be a big seller if more readily available.

My local guy keeps standard and FG 112s in stock, along with a mountain of other models. With all of the web stores the brick and mortar knife shops are growing fewer and farther between, unfortunately.

I 'll loan you one of mine to try out. Don't worry, you can't hurt it or even dull it for that matter.

Sometimes Academy Sports used to carry them. A lot of country grocery stores used to stock them, too. Mostly, you find 110s, though. At Walter's Big Box you can order online and have it shipped free to a store near you and if you do not want it, don't pay for it (or return it then and there).

I would hound your local retailer to stock them.

I've only seen one in person before. A few years ago a guy I church had me sharpen his up. I thought it was a nice size and figured I'd order me one. Well that's been about 4 years ago and I haven't ordered one yet. Not sure why. I do wish stores would carry them. Here in the Midwest rural area I would think they would sell for someone that wanted a decent size user but didn't want something as large as a 110.

Right, the brick knife stores are getting fewer. People go and shop at it and fine a knife they really like. Handle fits good, blade opens well and features they get excited about.
Then they hand it back to the sales clerk, go home and order it on-line, to save 5 bucks.
I can find 112's at gun shows. Some new and all condition in between. Just google gun shows in your near by cities and make a day of browsing. No telling what you'll stumble on to. Be sure and treat your wife out to eat. DM

I went to the big auction website to find a replacement for my long-lost 112. Picked up a superb, slightly used one for about 38 bucks, late '70s era, sheath included.

If you can't find a new one in a store then I would try the Gun Show route or even good pawn shops. Handle a 110 and know the 112 will be smaller. I carried a 112 many years because I felt I might as well have a straight knife as a 110. I quit awhile when they gave us free multi-tools but I went back to the Bucklite 112 till I did more office stuff than outside stuff. I then carried a 303 in the watch pocket of my uniform jeans and when they made us wear hiker type slacks I got a small Vantage clip. That was my Buck work history. I gave up the 112 when I finally realized I was never attacked by a wild animal, zombies or had to cut a seat belt. The Bucklite was easier to carry, then the 303 did all I needed cutting 'zombie" paper and it was just easier to clip a small Vantage to my pocket in the end. I still have a soft spot for the Bucklites and carry a Selector model when deer hunting.

I had one (440C) about three decades ago, wore it out through sharpening on carborundum hones (no diamond hones back then), and last year starting searching for another. They are hard to find in stores; I looked in Alberta, Idaho (not the Buck Shop, but next time through Post Falls I plan to take the tour), Washington and Oregon, no luck. Late last November I ordered one from Buck's Custom Shop: S30V, oak grips, rivets, brass frame. It arrived early in January and I am absolutely thrilled with this knife. I might have been happy with the standard in 420HC, if I could have found one, but I am not sorry I went the extra length to get this little jewel. Whether it's the blade geometry or the steel, it stands out as one of the best cutters in my meager collection of, um, 60+ blades. I rank it equal to my Dozier K1 General Purpose and my Sebbie 21 in slicing performance, and its edge holding equivalent to S35Vn or CTS-XHP.
