Buck 112 Micarta 2 Liner - Need Some Help

Guys: I bought this a while back off the bay and sent it into Buck to have it cleaned and sharpened. Not sure what I got here. The blade looks to be about 1/8" shorter than my 422 which is 3" long. I assume this is a pretty early one. The sheath is fairly "used" but works well. Any input would be much appreciated.

Mr. Fish, Thanks for posting these nice photos of your 1st version, 1st variation, 112. Yours was mfg. in 1972 of the first ones that rolled out the Buck plant doors. Nice find, DM

Interesting stuff David. So the 112 came along roughly 8 years after the first 110. Any comments on the blade length?

The blade appears to be short to me. It should be 3" so I suspect the tip has been broken and the blade reprofiled.

Hi utah -

Very nice! I looked for quite some time before I was able to find one of those -

I agree the blade is a litte short, but it surely came out nice from the Buck refurbish!

Boy is that the truth. Never ceases to amaze me what Buck will do toa knife for $7. BTW - your knife is really nice, and looks to be the right length.

BTW - My name is Tony but my blog name is Utah_fish. Really enjoy flyfishing on Boulder Mountain east of Bryce Canyon in Utah. Never lived in Utah. Usually bring a Buck knife of some sorts with me too.

Nice 112 Tony, do you have a picture of it closed to see how much distance between the point and the butt spacer.

Mine has about 1/4-5/16 space

I think it is a little short but not too much

Excellent point. Here's the pic and it looks to be right at 5/16. When I measure the blade from tip to the brass it right at 2 and 7/8 inches which says its 1/8 inches short.

Yes, Fritz is correct as I've seen them at that length and were new in the box.
It is very interesting the changes the 112 went thru so quickly. DM

So what is a ROM value for this? I have no idea. I've got $52 in it and don't plan on selling it anytime soon. (Always leave the door open......;)) I believe the sheath to be original but don't know for sure. It's pretty rough but does the job.

I'm never correct on these things, but I am certain, you can get more out than you got in. I think $75 would be easy to get. Mine was the 2nd true collector that I accumulated after my 71-72 116 inverted 3 liner. I dont think I'll try to find out what I can get for it.

I agree. We'll keep them and enjoy them. I've got this one on my desk and enjoy having its company. Now a first edition 110 would bring 10 times that amount.

Just read the Sticky from Joe Houser on the Ranger 112 Data and that first edition knife perfectly describes mine. Wow - never had a first of any kind knife.

At least. I have seen $900-1200 estimate for a mint 1st 1st with box and papers, from a very reliable source here on the forum a couple years ago.

.... I'm not trying to change the direction of this thread about of your sweet 112....

Yes I've seen some 110's go in that range. There's currently a pretty old 110 on the bay and I'm watching it to see what it ends up at.

Dreary morning here so was browsing old threads and found this one. Just happened to have a Cat-1 v-2 112 user laying here on the desk so put the ruler on it and blade is 2 7/8.

So being curious, drug a couple of minty Cat 1-v1's out of the toy box. One measured 2 7/8 and the other goes 2 13/16.

No point to this other than observations. Looks like there were some variances in blade lengths during that time.

One of these mintys is loaded. Could use the proper box and paper for the other one.

Good to know Pack. Thanks for the information. Seems like an eighth of an inch or 3/16 is quite a bit of variation. Wonder why?

Others will chime in with better info, but I believe in that time, they were mostly hand made and blade length may not have been a quality check as long as within some tolerance level.

I have seen some variation in older 110's as well.
