Looking for a small edc fixed blade and trying to decide between these two. Is the Gen5 worth twice the 113?
Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

I don't have either one but I am wanting a Gen 5, for me I like the size a little better than the 113.

I have both and while I like them both, I prefer the 113. That's just a personal preference and based only on esthetics. Here's a side by side comparison of a couple of custom ones (I didn't have pictures of my standard ones side by side) with a 112. They are both nice and comparable in size so I think it woukd boil down to personal preference. Is the Gen-5 worth twice the price? Hmmm, I don't think so if you just want an EDC.

I'm glad you posted this, I have also been thinking of getting a 113 as an EDC. I look forward to reading other responses on this comparison.

Have both and would pick the Gen 5 over the 113. Both are great knives but once you get them in hand you'll most likely find that one feels better than the other and for me that is the Gen 5.

Plumberdv,

Which handle is the biggest? I was thinkin of a Gen 5 because I thought the handle was bigger.

It's a push as far as I'm concerned, but you be the judge. A picture is worth a lot of hot air. ;)

In case the type of sheath might figure into your choice, here's the one's I have. I've only seen the one design for the 113 (on the left) but three for the GEN-5's.

I like the Gen5 but the 112 fits my hand better so I have more 112's than the six 5's and only have one 113 that I use during hunting season and it shows it.*

I have to have a come to Blade Forums moment, I am really superstitious about the number 13, that is the biggest reason I don't buy a 113 Ranger. I know I am crazy! go ahead and Laugh, like Clint Eastwood, I will live through it!

Those knives isn`t all that different, I just bought a 113 and it`s great, I like it a lot and for it`s size it can get big jobs done. I cannot think gen5 would be any "better", but if I had one it would sure get the job done.
I found one annoying detail of the 113 though, the blade of the knife could be a trifle longer and still not hit the bottom of the otherwise nice sheath. I dislike sheaths that is exessively long compared to the knife, but fixed it easily by making a press-button sheath for it myself.

I also Like both of these little fixed blade knives. you will like what ever knife you pick!

I hesitated to mention this little guy because normally I don't suggest something different than what the OP asks about. I only do it this time because many don't even know these exist.

This little skinner is a Buck exclusive for Bass Pro's Redhead line of merchandise. It comes or came in three versions, the stag with a 154CM blade, a black G10 handled one with 420HC and a walnut handled one one, also with 420HC. Two models, the stag and walnut are still available. They're all sweet, but I guess I haven't taken a picture of the walnut handled one yet. Just imagine the G10 model with wood instead.

Thanks for all the comments and opinions.

Plumerdv,
You have a very nice collection. Thanks for all the pictures and comparisons. After seeing your suggestion on the Bass Pro Shop's Red line little skinner and being not too far from them, I'm going to take a ride over there and check them out in person. I kind of like the handle on that one. Thanks.

Check them out, if you're lucky they may even have all three (Gen-5, 113 and the Redhead) so you can compare them.

Used a 113 on a whitetail last anterless season and it worked perfect. I really like it. I was concerned about sized cause I got a reasonably big paw, but no issues at all.

The 113 is on my "someday I'm going to own one of those" list.

Finances dictate that it will be awhile. But as much as I love the Buck 110, I think the Buck 112 and 113 are among the most beautiful stock production knives ever. To my eyes and hands, there's just something about the curve of that front bolster. I envy folks who live/work in places where a fixed blade is a reasonable EDC option. Until then, I carry a 112 (Ecolite or classic).

If it were my dollars, the 113 would be my first pick by a long shot. It's just more "Buck" than the others.

But, this is like tastes in cars, beer and... well... The question is what makes you happiest.
