I would like to know more about a pair of knives that i had just acquired and what the value to the knife is....I have a buck 118/103 knives that both fit in a black flap over sheath similar to that of a gun holster. Upon closer inspection of the knives there seems to be some wood inserts found at the pommel and the front guard, The wood color is a nice red so it may be either cocobolo or cherrywood. the knife is in immaculate condition so is the sheath. the knives has some personal inscriptions with a date of 1980 " i presume this knife is 26 years old". the knives doesnt look to have been sharpened at all and everything except the inscriptions look like factory condition. if the knife doesnt have much collecters value than I plan on selling the knife so i would like to know how much i could sell the knife for and what to expect. thanks for your input

rctk1, pictures would help.

You could do a search on e-bay, they show up there. Also try the complete auctions search. Yours sound unusual with the wood "inserts" so pics are needed. Lots of knowledgable people here. Preston

What you have sounds like a Buck 104 combo set that probably originally came with a Buck 103 and a Buck 102.

In many sets, such as the one I have, something happens to the 102 since it is used more and the blade isn't as rugged as the 103. Some people also want something a bit different. On my set, for instance, the original owner, my father, bought it back in the early 1970's and the 102 fell out of the sheath on the freeway and broke while he was on his Harley. I inherited the set years later.

I replaced mine with a 60's vintage Buck 105, which will fit but the handle makes it a tight fit. I couldn't get hold of a Buck 118 at the time. The 105 works well and it has it's own cool qualities about it.

What drops in extremely well into the 104 sheath is a Buck 118, which would be my choice over the 102 to begin with.

The Buck 104 concept is very neat, and as far as I know, it's not currently in production. No matter what knife I'm carrying, on any real trip I'll usually have the Buck 104 set and a Norlund hatchet in my pack. I showed a picture of my old 104 set to a friend on the web and she liked it so much she went out and bought a 102 and a 103, and then made a really cool 104 style sheath for them.

Pictures really would help but i would bet that the spacers are either the red micarta or reddish colored bone hard fiber. What do the blade stamps say? This would really help to accurately date the set. Ebay is the best bet for current values and this will depend a lot of the age.
