My questions are, when did they start using the flap over sheath? and when did they stop using the sheath with strap? Both knives are basically identical with one exception the tip one the strap sheath is a little less defined. Both are one line 118's with the red bone fiber spacers. Thank you in advanced for any help!mark

Try the search feature as this has been discussed. The over the flap sheath started in 1971. The other sheath I've seen used with the hard fiber spacers and barrel nut models all the way back in late 62.
Could you post a photo of the end of the pommel of the righthand knife. Some nice 118's. DM

Well, we know they didn't start in 1971 like Dave said.

I'm thinking flap over sheaths started in late 1964 and were used on some models well into the 80s.

Maybe David meant Snoopy instead of "over-the-flap?"

Tell us more, David Martin.

:)

Blades Guide 7th Edition says the flap over sheath started about 1965, and the 1965 catalog illustrates one. The '62/'63 catalog shows the original style sheath with a keeper strap. There's no sheath shown in the '64 catalog, so who knows. I'm sure that DM meant the snoopy sheath

Whew!! I thought I had a bunch of non-original sheaths to go with my one and two liners.

No, I posted from my notes. The snoopy sheath for the 124 came early about that time but later for the other models. A two liner could have a flap over sheath as they date late 67-71. Perhaps even into 72. As the model numbers were added in 72. I've since gone back thru my collection and found a knife stamped with a Buck asterik to have a flap over sheath which dates it to early 67. So, 1966 is possible. DM
