Buck 118 with model 501 on the box?

I was at a trophy supply store today and noticed a small sign saying 25% off all Buck Knives in stock. I bought a model 118 Personal with a stag handle, but the box says model 501 (a folding knive model) and the sheath is a light brown leather Buck sheath unlike any Buck sheath I've seen before.

I paid $42 for it thinking it was a nice knife at a bargain price, but does the 501 box and different sheath make it any more valuable?

I was going to give it to my son for his 21st birthday coming up shortly, but I don't know if I should tell him to put it away as a collectible or put it on his hip and use it for hunting.

I think that is a great deal for a stag handle.

The boxes probably just got mixed up... I was in a store today also and looking at their stock... I had to tell the guy which knife went with which box.

But I didnt get any deals..

Bill, Wecome to the forum, I think you got a real deal:thumbup: :D  The light colored leather sheath is one that goes/went with Buck customs some years back. What does the tang stamp look like??? Can you post pics? Preston

It says only:
Buck
118
U.S.A

I can't see a way to upload a picture to post it here, if somebody can clue me in, I'll post it.

The store is JB Trophy on Coleman Ave. in San Jose, CA. They had a more Buck fish fileting knife with leather sheath, and many Buck folding knives- may were with custom-looking sides of the knives, but I was not looking for folding knives.

Hi Bill Lev,

Welcome to the forum. You don't want to give your son a knife with a miss-matched box!!!! My bithday is comming up so you should just give it to me:D . Where there any other Buck knives with stag handles there? Can you discribe any other Buck knives they had left for sale. I live about an hour and a half from San Jose. If they have some good Bucks left I may drive out to see what they have. Can you post the address as I don't know my way around San Jose and would need to print driveing directions.

Bill, you need a internet host for your pics. Imageshack http://imageshack.us/ or Photobucket...I use Imageshack.

Registeration is free, then the photos you choose are hosted, follow their directions(resize your image to 640 x 480) and you are provided a choice of links to use.

On Imageshack I use the embedded code for forums. I right click and select cut, then back to BF and insert that code between
.

Press preview and see if it is what you want, finish your post and submit.

Good Luck, Preston

I use PhotoBucket. They have a coder there that allows you to link the pics as thumbnails, so the thread here loads faster for us poor souls who aren't as rich as Preston and don't have his T1 internet connection...

I'm not rich you are:D :p :D

Bill, what ever you use, please post a pic. I did tell you to use the embedded code for forums but it is actually "Hotlink for forums(1)" that you should use. Preston

Hi Bill,
Welcome to the Buck Forums, and as the guys have stated, you got a deal on the knife alone. If you go back to do some shopping, my birthday is in January;)

Hi Bill that is a good deal!!! Even if its the wrong box!
By the way my birthday is February! :D

The pics I took had no detail- it looks like the model 118s that are for sale on eBay, has the swept blade and stag handle. I gave it to my son as an early birthday present, since deer season near his college open in September, with the option of keeping it as a collectible or using it. He voted for using it.

Here's the info where I bought it:

J B Trophies
jbtrophies.com
1348 Coleman Ave
Santa Clara, CA 95050
(408) 727-9500

Coleman runs along the south boundry of SJ airport, it's a couple minutes off Hwy 17 on Coleman. I'd give them a call if you're interested, she could read off the model numbers. Like I said, I think I got the last stag fixed blade knive, but there were many folding bucks that looked like custom sides (plates?).
