Saw this on eBay and thought it was interesting enough to add to the Buck forum. Description says it is an old Buck Knife salesman's sample showing the construction of a 119.

Pretty cool.

I think if it were a genuine sales sample they would have done a better job cleaning up the cut marks.

It looks more like someone is deliberately trying to show how hollow the handle fits the tang and how poorly the adhesive are applied. I wouldn't send my sales people out with something that rough.

That's exactly what I thought. Even the blade itself is rough. Possibly a demo'd knife to look at the adhesive application effectiveness or something but I doubt that is anything they would want to show around in
an attempt to sell more knives.

I do appreciate the fact that the corners of the tang have a radius for added strength.

Yes, I noticed the tang. I think we discussed that not long ago. Was happy to see that too.

The knife in the first post has a pre '86 stamp. This 119 blade from 1989 appears to have little to no radius.

Same on this '99 blade.

Looks like Buck changed the design for some reason. Perhaps when they discontinued 440C blades???

I think Pokt has it. Not a salesman's sample. Why didn't they show the stamped side in the photo? However, I took apart a 1973-79 Skinner 103 and it's rat-tailed tang looked like the one above. Keep working on it TAH. DM

Hope you didn't pay a lot for this peace. It does give me an Idea of how to make a few $$$. But I would have a hard time destroying a nice knife.

When I saw the photo of the wood and glue laid out. I thought you were doing a rehandle on a 119. DM

No, I just did a quick internet search for disassembled 119s to see if other tangs have a radius or not.

I wonder if someone got an unfinished 119 for their sporting goods store and cut the knife like that to expose the tang for sales purposes? I have seen such stores do similar things. It might have been a display knife of some sort someone cut into for that purpose.

Probably for a half-off sale. :D

If this was a salesman's knife it shows it's age and use ... or I guess the word would be abuse. I have worked with plenty of salesmen and most aren't known for taking care of samples. Especially in those days they would throw and load everything up in the trunk and travel from state to state. These weren't encased in velvet lined boxes or padded briefcases, I can assure you that.

Hmmm, according to the eBay description, here's another 119 "factory sample". This time in "unfinished" condition.
