I recently purchased a 119 on an impulse buy. Is it up to the task of being the primary fixed blade in my BOB? How is 420hc as far as edge retention, ease of sharpening and overall durability? Will this knife stand up to batoning? If you feel that the 119 is not up to the task, what would you recommend in the sub 75 dollar range? Thanks in advance for the input.
-Bob

The 119 is a well thought out, decent fixed blade, especially for the price. Buck has worked on the edge geometry to the point that they are sharper these days out of the box than ever. They have a good temper and hold an edge, but the thinned out edge will not stand up to heavy abuse, rough twisting or batoning. My advice: keep the 119 in your BOB and get a sharp hand axe for the other tasks at hand. There are other knives out there that are tougher, but the 119 is a good all-rounder that can slice up there with the best of them.

if you like bucks try a buck nighthawk. its tougher than an anvil and has a great handle.,,,VWB.

The 119 is a great knife, but I wouldn't "baton" any knife unless it were an emergency. I have an Ontario Spec Plus for the rough stuff.

I can't figure out why the 119 is as popular as it is, though......myself, I'd have a 105 for my main fixed blade knife and a 120 for my big knife and a 110 for almost everything that I actually needed a knife for.

The 119 doesn't fit into my knife plan.....I own only two, one soft handle and one phenolic handle......one's in the kitchen and one's stuck in between my mattress and box spring handy to my nightmares.

It's a great onion chopper.....which reminds me......I want to make chicken soup today......perfect day for it--cold, cloudy and misty.

:D

Thanks for your fowl offer, but I've already got it pretty much done 'cept fer the simmering.

Smells real fine.

No offense to chickenkind intended.

I make something called "boiled dinner", and my dogs love the left over water... :D

Take one whole boneless chicken breast; 8" of Hilshire Farms sausage; two NYS potatoes; four carrots; two onions; two stalks of celery. Cut up veggies into golf-ball sized pieces. (Or just get a frozen veggie bag of these from your supermarket - "Stew Vegetables"). Heat 2" of water in a stewpot with 4 pats of butter, a goodly shaking of coarse black pepper, pour in some salt, add your favorite seasoning, add the chicken and sausage when boiling and boil for 20 minutes. Take chicken & sausage out, dice up into bite size bits; put back in. Add veggies, bring to boil again for another 20 minutes. Scoop out and serve hot. Pour leftover water on dogs food, sparingly. Yummers! :p

Be sure to cut everything up with your favorite Buck knife...I used a 110 for this dish... :)

That sounds real fine. I'll have to try that sometime. 'Spose I'll have to get a dog?

I usually get a 102 and a 119 involved. I still haven't gotten a 121 (which I think would make a real fine kitchen knife). Thus reminded.....I go again to check out the 121s on e-Bay.

I can always donate it to the local Humane Society animal shelter.

:D

Not funny. I support (both $$$ and adoptions) the Weimaraner Club of America/Rescue Committee, and the Doberman Pinscher Club of America/Rescues. My "local" Dog Control Department only keeps a stray dog for 5 days, then destroys them. If you live in Erie County NY, a stray with no tags, no chip, and no report will be destroyed after 1 day. The Dog Control Officer there is a political appointee who could care less - he wants a better job, and this way of cutting costs is his way of getting it.

I don't know how long the SPCA keeps theirs... :(

I've had as many as 5 Rescues at one time, presently down to 2 but on the lookout for one more.

These guys need our help. They can't make it on their own.

(I just cut open a package with my Buck 442) :)

We give to the local Humane Society. Actually, it's becoming our only charity.

Animals are people, too.

I have an old 444 that I use for packages and such.
