hi,

i hope i got the right forum for this question. if not, feel free to move elsewhere.

i got this 2001 or so (relatively new) Buck 119 Special. i don't like the guard on the spine-side of the knife (top). now i want to get rid of it with a saw and finish things nicely with files and sandpaper.

now the question: is this Phenol-handle and/or the plasticky guard-material toxic? can i safely work on this knife without having to fear inhaling toxic fumes or fibres? anything else i need to know before i start or is it a pretty much straight-forward simple job? any pointers on a better approach to the job are welcomed too. i don't have power-tools at my disposal, so i'm gonna do everything with handtools and elbow-grease.

thanks in advance for your help guys,

denn

Hi Dennis, I just recently reshaped a 119. I shortened the blade and made a modified drop point. Somewhat unusal, but it works and I like it. I also lowered the top part of the guard. Although I did it on my belt grinder, it is easy to do with hand tools. The guard is aluminum with a micarta spacer. Files and sandpaper will work fine. The phenolic material is hazardous and you should at the least wear a dust mask. Good luck, and have fun ;)
