Did Buck make a 119 stag handle knife in the 70's, are there any pictures of it? What color was the sheath?
 
Buck used stag in the 50s and then not again till the 80s or 90s if I'm not mistaken...
 
Buck brought out the Buckhorn line of knives in 1987 that included the 119. I have one and it came with the brown custom sheath. I've no idea if that sheath came with it originally or not as the catalog doesn't mention what sheath was provided with them.

I did find that Buck produced a bunch of fixed blades prior to 1986 and during or after 1981. Also, the older ones I gather had two spacers at the pommel instead of only one like the newer, mid-80's models. They are talked about here, in an old thread:

I have been working with Joe Houser on this subject for sometime now. We do not have the exact dates nailed down just yet but I have a 102,103,105,116,118,119,120,121 all done in Sambar stag from the Buck factory in the box. All of the warranty cards are from 1981. Joe stated that these handles were an option in the regular line and did not make the trip throught the custom shop. All of my knives are stamped BUCK model # U.S.A. no date stamp. Joe may have more information.

Looks like they mixed up the labels on numbers 2 and 3 in the advertisement above (woodsman and pathfinder)

Yes they did it seems. I hadn't noticed that until you mentioned it. The color page shown above is actually from the '88 catalog. I used it because it shows them much better than the non colored one from '87. The '87 catalog shows the 119 with two spacers at the pommel, however, mine has the '87 date stamp and has but one spacer there.

If milanesjf's knife doesn't have a date stamp it should be one of the older ones prior to this series. It's possible that it can even be one from the custom shop if it has the Buck/Custom/USA stamp instead of the standard Buck/119/USA stamp. The custom shop picture shows four spacers used instead of two or three so that would be another indicator.

This thread (post #19) shows pictures posted by a fellow forum member of his pre '86 121 with three spacers and a screenshot or scan of the custom shop version with four. It also shows the brown sheath which I assume is an older version of the one I have.

Here's pictures of Justin's (the OP) knife. It is one of the early '80s versions that were made prior to the BuckHorn series.

Very nice knife Justin and a great find.

Very cool thread guy's! Dave thanks for the catalog shots....I like the 2 spacer look with the stag (very nice Justin). I also have a 87 stag 119, but, it's like yours Dave only one spacer:(

Here is a shot of it with a 2007 119, look at the blood grooves.

You're welcome John. I enjoy doing "research" on things like that, it's very educational for me. I also like the looks of the three spacer stag model. The extra spacer at the pommel adds just a little something.

Regarding the three spacer model. I'm curious whether or not any '87s were made with the extra spacer or could it be that Buck simply used one of the older models for the '87 catalog.

Interesting. Now that you mentioned it, I checked some of my other 119's and found obvious differences in the grooves.

The grooves have evolved so much over the years that the grooves that are seen on current knives look horrible, IMO. They look like someone cut them with a dull dremel tool.
 
John, those are beautiful, I also have a 119 black handle, made in 1989. I had been looking for the 119 stag for about 10 yrs.

John, that is a beautiful knife!! I always like the 119 bucks, specially the shape of the blade, I have a few folding knives from buck, however, none of them have stag handles.
 
Seeing the stag 119's in this thread got me curious to the spacers in the one I have. Some years ago I sent in my 3-liner for replacement of the phenolic handle that I had managed to crack. Only one spacer on the guard and pommel.

At the time it was possible to get sambar stag which I did.

You guys all have some sweet 119s... I don't have a Stag handle 119 yet... I hope to find one soon... I hope it's has nice as all of yours... :thumbup:
