Buck 120 General Question

Hi everyone,

I have just signed up to bladeforums after a few weeks of lurking.

I recently acquired a Buck 120 General in what looks to be brand new condition. Box looks brand new etc. My question is, although this knife looks brand new it does not have a Buck year code stamped on the ricasso: is this normal? I was under the impression that all Buck knives post 1985 have a year code. Is this an older knife, or did it simply miss out on being stamped? Has anyone else encountered something like this? Am I simply going insane?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I have searched through the archives and can see no mention of this anywhere else. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome,

Nice knife you've got there, my guess is that you have an old one, I believe the 120 General has been discontinued though I don't know for how long.

Hi Luis,

Thank you. I wondered if it might be a pre 1985 knife. If it is I am wondering how it managed to stay in its box and in new condition until now. I can't believe it was simply overlooked in a warehouse somewhere for ten years! Hence my wondering if the omission of a year code was something that occasionally happened with Buck knives. Guess this is a mystery I will never have an answer for. Can anyone else shed any light on whether EVERY Buck knife from 1985 onwards received a year code stamp?

No, not every knife received a year mark. The first models to come to my mind are those with a Buck Custom stamp. Also, the 110 linerlock model was stamped Buck (script)/ U.S.A. I am sure there were several others.
However, most standard fixed blade 100 series knives were stamped with a year mark. I seem to recall this question recently arising on the model 120 and it seems to me these were special project models made for Cabela's. I do not recall if a year mark was used on them or not but they were produced a few years after the model 120 was removed from the Buck catalog. Please describe the box color, sheath construction and any dates on paperwork in the box. That should help us date your knife.

Will,

Thanks for the link. I had looked at that thread but it didn't seem to offer much in the way of clarification.

Larry,

Many thanks for your response. On your advice I checked out the Cabela website. From appearances it would seem this may be the answer. The knife I have is marked "Buck Pro-Line" along the length of the blade exactly the way the knife in Cabela's listing is. Unfortunately I am away from the knife in question at the moment but I will post all the relevant details about the box, paperwork etc when I am reunited with it next week :)

Many thanks for your time.
