Question , Found a Buck 124 in one of my safes ,,it was in a Buck custom shop brown large box, saying 166/250 nothing else,,,, In it ,a 124 labeled knife , looks redish and a tighter grained, thicker ,macarta grip then norm ,no date stamp. no 166/250 on the knife .. Do you think its just a 124 stuck in the box ? Now I will go one further ,next to it, I found a 124 [ serrated blade and inverted logo ],no date stamp,,drilled pommel,, maybe this knife belongs to the box ? [brown boxs were made what dates ?] I am not up on sorts ,,maybe some insight on what is custom of this sort,,and maybe wrong knife in that box.. I have seen many 124 knifes , , A thicker and a redish cast color ,and more layers of macarta, thicker grip may be diff. but, IS IT CUSTOM...............swing sheath was with serrated knife no 124 on back, ,other is a double buck named snap,no swing sheath 124 on back,,..
Thanks .. not the greatest pics, for now

BS, nice 124s... I've never seen a 124 come in a box like that... I'm sure HK or DM or EEE or Haebbie will be along to tell you more about your 124s...

I'm not sure that the box belongs to one of the two
124s. But what do I know? If it is the box from
one of the two I think it would be from the redhead.
May be that the custom shop made a small scale
redhead series with serrated blades.

If the redhead is a production knife (what I think) it was
made in 1971. The black one is from 1972 if it has stainless
guard and pommel. If they are made of aluminum the knife
is made between 1973 and 1981. After this time Buck went
to impregnated birch scales. Someone would know more to
nail down the time when the small grid micarta was used.

Best,
Haebbie

I have a couple of those boxes and the large one is a perfect fit for a 124 in the sheath. It's marked 169/250 with the same label as yours. It contains an Alaskan Statehood 25 year 110 and the wall plaque for it. It's the larger one in this picture.

I'll agree w/ Haebbie. Except those boxes are not correct for that model.Yes, the more open grain micarta is earlier. Nice knives. DM
