What was the last year Buck made this knife and how can you tell year to year, or generation to generation, differences?

Thanks in advance.

Pepper, The year date codes are at the top of the thread page . I think
they were last made in 1999 but Buck continues to bring them back in production as special projects .
As a matter of fact I saw one last year they did . A great model and is still in good demand . It makes a good camping/heavy use knife . I've used one of mine on processing a large buck Mule Deer and it worked well . DM

I'm glad you asked, as I just looked this up last week...there is a great article in the BCCI Dec 2006 Newsletter on the Buck 122 and 124 by Joe Houser...You can find the PDF of that newsletter on the BCCI web site...after you join... :D

It's worth it... ;)

That article states when Buck first began manuf. them (1967) not when they ceased . Its a good article though . DM

It tells the year-to-year differences, which is what I was referring to...It's actually kind of confusing...One rivet; two rivet...Wrap around; two piece butt...

Pics would have been nice...But we can't rely on Joe for everything; we need an anal retentive collector like 334dave to archive and collate 122/124 pics... :D

There is another good article Joe H. wrote on the 122/124 in the June 2003 issue . In it he tells of finding a one line 124 stamped BUCK* which many were sure did not exist .
So, guys be on the look out as no one is sure what may be found . DM

so as i said years ago even buck does not know
what they made or did not make...
as Joe said one time
you have to be able to judge the
"buckness" of it..
more then once has some thing been said
to not be out there
and then it shows up.. tell then it is a UBK
unidentifiable buck knife:eek:

buck is and has always been
most concerned with making dang good knives :D
not record making and paper storage!!

Dave, True but with the help of many like Joe, Larry and yourself (and many others here) they are improving in this area . DM

Wow, Thanks alot guys, for all the information.

From what I can tell I have just purchased, as identified through the help of this discussion, a pre 1986 Buck 124 knife with the help of you all.
It definitely has a, ''Buckness'' to it!

A question I have regarding 124's, some came with rare factory handle material ie the red or white micarta. Is there anyway to re-assure yourself that what you are looking to purchase has not been re-handled. Is there a way to cross reference the rare materials with the production symbol on the blade?

CDN, Yes, the file history of most all of Buck's models are written and updated . They tell all the variations, materials, colors, how many were made, ect.. Entry is by membership code . Or, you can post here or e-mail a member . DM

1967 first year of production,1997 was the last year of production 124's. 30 year period
Special runs of limited 124's were made along with one offs after 1997.
An updated 122/124 ,blade, handle ,sheath types with pictures will be on the BCCI web site by the end of January 2010.
