I was pretty bored today so thought I would admire my 124s.I was just curious to the differences in weight.

the 3 I weighed

1.buck 124 1971 serrated black grey micarta
2.buck 124 1991 white corian bone mirror blade
3.buck 124 custom stag mirror blade

pics are not great .

The stag came in at 210grams
white corian came in at 390grams
but the older serrated came in 500grams well over double the weight of the stag !

Im pretty surprised by the differences and I prefer the more weighted 124s.

well that's amused me for few hours sorry to bore you all ;)

The stag version being that much lighter is a no-brainer to me. Just look at how much less metal there is in the stick tang vs the full tang versions, plus the shorter handle and smaller pommel.

The one that baffles me is the serrated version at 500 gr. I weighed three of my micarta versions and came up with (in grams) 347.7, 353.2 and 381.8 (for one of my new 124's). The two wood handled models weighed in at 380.3 and 366.4. None came even close to 500 gr.

I weighed all of them on a digital scale and rounded the weights down from 3 digits (to the right of the decimal point).

I put my 3 grey black micarta handled 124s next to the same 1 as your bottom micarta.
There is quite a bit of difference of thickness, seems to fill the hand more.

I see your point with the stag,

What is it about the serrated version that you think makes it that much heavier? I just measured a few of mine with digital calipers and the older micarta handled ones all run just about 1.04" thick. The new version which feels more "hand filling" than them, measures only 1.08 thick. It's a full (plus a tiny bit) 4 oz. lighter than the 500 gr. serrated one you have. That's a bit more than a full size Vantage Avid with the Dymondwood handles I just weighed.

Where do you think that extra weight is coming from?? Four ounces is a lot.

I know it's not a huge issue, I'm just baffled by the difference.

Thats exactly why i started this thread.

Maybe it has secret compartment hidden in the handle filled with gold !

Possibly the scales im using may not be 100% accurate, il weigh the other two later and post results, il also measure the handle thickness

Are the materials used for the pommel and hilt/guard the same on the serrated as the other 124? Just wondering if somehow one has aluminum and the other has stainless steel? Something like that might account for a difference in weight.

Ive just weighed and measured the 3 grey black micarta ones, versus the black micarta same as plumbers.

All 3 grey ones weighed more or less bang on 500g and the handles were near enough 9.9cm around
The black micarta 3 line, weighed as stated by plumber around 380g this was 9.2 ish

the first 3 weighed around the same give or take 20 grams the far right is a much lighter 1

About '73 they changed from SS guards and butts to aluminum. That must be the reason for the weight difference.

May be that there are different shapes of the handle too.
All together can make the difference.

Bingo ! Thats must be the reason.

Haebbie ive also noticed different shapes

I just did a bit of research. A 1" diameter aluminum rod, 1" long weighs .0769# compaired to a SS rod the same length and diameter which weighs .2252#, so the SS parts on the old 124's weigh almost three times what the aluminum parts weigh.

Haebbie ive also noticed different shapes

Yes, Skelator, I saw. But the knife on the richt hand side has
steel guard and pommel AND a big belly. Yo can feel it easily
that it has more weight than the other one.
