Does anyone know what Buck is hardening the 13c26 steel to ?. I didn't even see it listed on the Buck Website.I bought one of the new Vantage Avid knives this week and really like this knife. Everything was perfect and it was shaving sharp out of the box.I already had the small and large Vantages with the 420HC. I will probably get the Vantage Pro next.I had a Kershaw Skyline that had the 13c26 and they were hardening those to 58rc.I lost the Skyline so I will use Bucks from now on.I have been reading the Buck Forum for a few months now and have learned a lot.So this is my first post on the forum and a new BUCK ONLY knife man now.

Welcome to the Buck forums!!

I havent had a chance to use the Sandvik steel yet, but I hear great things! I would think hardness is in that same ballpark that you state.

I know you cant go wrong with the Vantage pro either ;) Its a great design!

Jack, Welcome to the Buck forum . These are the best bunch of guys on the forums . Hang out with us as they will really help you . This was discussed two years ago and I remember Buck in heat treating this product was shooting for 59 . Some would like to see more but realize its a range . Not an exact number . Plus, those hardness testers are only accurate to +- one and must be calibrated often to be kept in tolerance .
So, the 58 you got (what machine ?) is still, within the target Buck is after and could be a 59 . Hardness is only one factor that expresses something about the blade . The steel elements, heat treat and edge profile are others of greater importance, that indicate how a blade will perform . DM

I think you are right David, max for 13c26 is 62, Sandvik shoots for 58-59 for knives, 63.3 for razors, 55-62 is the normal range. Lots of tech info if you gleen through this thread with Jerker from Sandvik from last year.

I sent Jeff Hubbard at Buck an email last year asking how hard Buck was running the 13C26 Vantage Avid model . He said

"We currently run those at a 59-60 Rc I hope this helps."
