First off, I am posting this in general because many people had a Buckmaster in the '80 - '90's but do not presently visit the Buck forum.

I just bought a Buckmaster and am considering using it. It is just plain awesome ~ the blade is much thicker than my Swamprat Camp Tramp, and I consider that to be really thick. The hollow handle seems like a really useful place to store things that you want to keep dry. Finally, the sharpening stone in the sheath is a very nifty idea.

To those of you who owned one, what are your opinions of it? How is the blade steel? Is it as strong as it looks?

Hurry, please! The temptation to go outside and chop down a tree or cut a car in half is getting too strong...

 ;)

No, it is April 2nd; half an hour away from being April 3rd :p
Actually, I am being serious. I never really thought it was a 'serious' knife, but now that I have handled one my opinion is starting to change. It is really one serious chunck of steel.

Joe & cgd160- Why do you feel this way about the Buckmaster? Have you ever used one?

I had one a long time ago , traded it for a Gerber BMF . My friend ended up breaking it by chopping and prying a log .

I have one and really like it. It is heavy but it seems to take abuse pretty well.

cgd160 ~ Did your friend break the Gerber or the Buck? Which one did you like better?

I had a BuckMaster the first year they came out and they still had the compass in the buttcap. The compass was not accurate, The steel was 425 modified, IIRC. The knife would never get really sharp and was very butt heavy. I hated the hard plastic sheath and the sawteeth chipped on the corners when I tried to saw hardwood. I eventually broke about 1" off the tip of the knife. I ended up getting rid of it and eventually bought a Gerber BMF as well. I used this knife for 15 years before finally buying a Swamprat CT a few months ago. The Camp Tramp is a much better knife.

I had one back in the 80's... pain to carry, those darn anchors got in the way and poked things all the time. They also seemed to make the knife difficult to hold. People did think it looked cool. I too got a BMF and never used the Buck.

The upside is this... keep it mint and sell it. I bought mine new for like $120. I sold it last year (mint with box) for about $350 on EBAY and had tons of people fighting over it. For some reason there seems to be a great demand and intrest in this knife... too each his own... however you can sell it at a nice mark up and get a good knife.

I had a Buck 184 WAY back in the 80's, but I never could figure out how to stab anything/anyone with those 2 spikes that screw into the hand-guard, so I sold the damn thing.:D.

Well it sounds like the general consensus is that it looks cool, but performs poorly. I think I will just flebay it away...

K man , before you sell it send it to Buck and have them clean it up (if it needs it) . This way you can advertise mint condition :D .
