I have a unique knife that was modified for me by Steven Rice (STR). The blade is marked 186, folllowed by an arrow pointing right. But it does not have the large clip made out of the same material as the handles. Instead, it has a flat handle on both sides. Rice put on a lowrider clip and an ambi thumbstud.

Two questions:

--because of the flat slab, is this a 186?

--were all 186s titanium? If not, any way to tell?

Does your 186 come apart... Some 560s have 186 blades or 110 blades... Can you post some pics of your knife... That always helps... :) ...

Far as I know, all 186s and 560s handles were titanium....

Here's one of my 186s that has a 110, S30V blade and no clip... I don't care for clips... But some of my EDC knives have them... ITE

Okay, now I'm confused. How do I tell the difference between a 560 and a 186?

ASBOB, so does yours come apart or is it riveted together... Do you have any pics... ITE ...

 The 186 was only made for two years, '87 and '88. I'm confused as to how the OP's knife could have a 186 blade with a 2009 date stamp (right pointing arrow)? It must be a right pointing V, that would be from '87.

The 186. Ground breaking innovation. Pocket clip, screw construction, light weight, strong, titanium, comes with tool...

This knife brought me back to Buck with a will.

BTW: Really good photography and explanations. I have several new screen backgrounds. THX. ITE, your S30V blade addition to the brilliant 186 has me swooning. This would be the knife/blade to bring back in order to celebrate Buck's anniversary. You are a genius Armand.

--Sorry, I don't have access to any photography setup. A friend is going to take care of it for me, but that will be after the holiday.

--I assume it comes apart. Based on the pics above, it matches up perfectly to the images of the screws, and not the rivets.

--On the tang stamp, my apologies for ignorance on my part. It definitely is a right pointing V. I didn't know the proper term, and referred to this as an arrow.

Now for the big question. I have one of these in clean condition. But I had STR replace the clip with a low rider clip and add an ambi thumbstud. I no longer have the original clip (this was done several years ago before I knew better). I plan to sell this; will these modifications, in general, raise or lower the price?

My thanks.

It's easy to mistake the V for an arrow. :)

In my opinion and speaking as an owner of one of the original 186's complete in the box, I'd say that the modifications, particularly the loss of the original clip will definately lower the value to a collector.

Yes, I'd say lowers the price as most collectors want it in the original condition not somebody elses modification. Regardless of how good the work was. DM
