Buck #188 knife info?

I have a Buck knife that my grandfather bought for me back around 1986 or so. It has what's looks like a black anodized blade and olive drab handle with a bayonet mount and has Buck 188/USA stamped on the blade. Other then that I can't find any info on this knife?

The reason I'm writing is I would like to get it restored for sentimental reasons back to it's original condition as it does show some signs of wear and tear from use over the years (black anodized coating has been worn off in places and a few scratches in the olive drab paint on the handle) I would like to have it sharpened as well. Is there anyone who would do this type of work? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I believe the 188/M9 came out in 1987 so your date is pretty close. I would contact Buck about a possible refurb.

That model is still desired by many folks. It's worth sending it in and having it near to original condition. DM

If you find someone to refurbish the knife please post some before and after pictures for all of us to see. I have a few and if there is someone out there that can do a nice original job on them than I would like to know.

Restored?? Looking new is nice, but maybe all the "character" of years of use as your grandfather intended is gone.

Just a thought.
