Hi. I just wanted to know if there´s any difference between older models (´96 or ´97) and new models.
If you can buy a new old stock or a new one from last years, which would you prefer and why?
Also, I found on the bay a 2012 production with birchwood handle. Is that correct? I mean, did Buck make a limited edition with that kind of handle that year?
Thanks in advance

The Buck Vanguard was introduced in late 1991. The wood handles have always been resin impregnated laminated Birch, aka Dymondwood. Names such as Rosewood, Heritage Walnut, Cherrywood, and Cocobola etc are dye colors, not wood species. The standard blade steel has always been 420HC. For standard knives, there is no difference between older or newer knives as regards blade steel or wood species. If you are looking for something other than a standard knife, premium steels and titanium coated blades, or premium handle materials such as Elk or Sambar Stag have been offered on limited models over the years. For example, you can currently buy the Alaskan Guide version from Cabela's with S30V steel and a titanium nitride coated blade.

Good info indeed. Thank you very much, DeSotoSky.
Im not looking for nothing special, just wanted to be sure about the steel and the handle before to buy any of them and your answer covered all, so, thanks again. =)
