My ATS-34 cutting edge has chips or nicks on it and not sure if I should try to sharpen it or send it to Buck and have them do it?

Sharpening may have a bit of a learning curve at first. But if you own tools, along comes the responsibility of maintaining those tools. I recommend trying sharpening, you could pick up a cheap norton oilstone for a few bucks at home depot or lowes. If you mess up somehow, you can just send it in to buck anyways! I found that once I started sharpening my first knife, I used it waaaay more.

Learn to sharpen, just not on that knife. Learn on a cheap kitchen knife. Then apply what you learn to the Alpha. DM

David gave you some great advice, find a cheaper knife to practice on until you've learned how to sharpen knives.Good sharpening skills can be learned from some youtube videos they have now.I learned a long time ago the value of a sharp knife compared to a dull one, also learned how to sharpen by hand from gramps.

How big are the chips/ nicks in the edge?

They seem big under a magnifying glass but only about 1/3 the depth of the cutting edge. Would it be called a chip or a nick?

Thanks for the responses, it's been a while since I have sharpened a blade and the last time was with a electric can opener that had built in sharpening stones. I have and old USA made Schrade Old Timer 330T I could practice on that looks like it was shapened by the can opener.

If you don't have the proper sharpening equipment, I would suggest a trip to post falls, they will make it sharp as new for you!
