Howdy folks,

here a question from The Netherlands: recently I bought among some fine buck knives (nighthawk, alpha hunter folding ATS 34 with rosewood handles and 819 signature series-s30v steel) (Yes I can hear you guys, luckey me!) also the Buck 3-stone sharpening system:
http://www.buckknives.com/catalog/detail/174/245
This system comes with a small yellow plastic triangle, representing an angle sharpenig guide of 23 degrees. However, if you search the website of Buck, you are advised to sharpen your knives with an angle of 13 to 16 degrees...
What to believe?????? Is there anybody out there with experience with this sharpening system?
Buck also advises to sharpen with a clock-wise motion. On other websites you are advised to sharpen with a stroke movement, not circular....
What to believe?
And is this sharpenig system a really good one???
Who can help this troubled dutchmen?????

I've never used this particular system, but the two diamond stones are just the same as DMT sharpeners. I'd say that your best bet will be to find what angle suits you, your knives and the type of use you give them... and stick to that. With my DMT sharpeners I never rotate but use a stroking motion, moving to and fro along the "stone" and carefully from one end of the blade to the other. The diamond sharpeners remove more steel than you might imagine if you've not used them before. It should only take a few wipes to do all that you need to do to a knife which isn't truly blunt. I would also question the use of the Honing Oil suppied with the kit. Diamond sharpeners are NOT meant to be used with oil. A little water on them to help prevent them clogging is all thats needed. (A small spit on the thing works fine in the field) I use exactly the same (spit) with Arkansas stones and have never had a problem with clogging or excessive wear.
Any problems you have sharpening the 819 you just bought and I'll happily do it for you. I'll return it.... eventually.... I promise! (You're right... I AM thinking Lucky you! *LOL*)

Ok longstrider,

tnx for your fast repsonse! I had some exercises on some older knives, and I use the strokes as you described and you're also right about the honing oil. As a matter of fact: you're almost right about everything......
almost...... the 819 is razorblade sharp out of the box, so I must dissapoint you! But thanks anyway.....I'll keep it in mind........ :) *LOL* indeed! :)

The Kit was sold before we did our Edge studies to come up with the 13-16 deg/side angle.
Only use water as has been said before.. as for technique, I'm sharpening impaired. Can't help you with that :)

Jeff probably means when his knife needs sharpening he walks it over to the people who edge the knives and lets them do it. LOL. Use a Sharpie and mark your edge before you sharpen, then take a few strokes. You will see where you are hitting and then you can adjust from there.
There are very few of us that freehand anymore. With Edgepro, Lansky and Sharpmaker its easier to maintain the factory angle or even change it if it doesnt fit a particular use.
hope this helps a bit, guy
